Why does TV air reception suck?

With all of the technology advances in electronics why is it still not possible to get good reception without cable? I've tried using an amplified antenna and that did no good. I'm about 35 miles from the broadcasting tower that I'm trying to use. I'm also on the 5th floor of a building with no other buildings any higher. All I want is to pick up the freakin Fox network for football. I'm trying ot get this at my TV at work so I can't use an outdoor antenna. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Well, this is not one of them..

example:
The Internal combustion engine is relatively the same technology
but has had improvements in how it works such as injection, timing, fuels, ignition, cyl shape, etc..

The TV itself has made huge leaps in technology.
Broadcasts towers etc in NON HDTV format have changed little as far as I know.
What's changed in design of the TV radio wave spectrum and anten systems on TV's.
