why do you workout?

personal health? vanity? other?

personally, i do it for the vanity. i could care less if i bench 105 or 805 if i look i could look like nasser or ronnie(i know, some of you think they look like shit, but im talking about *that* level)

my friend says im doing it for all the wrong reasons, but how many times have you got into a stroking constest over who can bench the most anyways? theres so many variables when it comes to bench racing about weights. its a good feeling to see people that havent seen you in a while and they say something like "you look great" or "what the hell have you been eating?!" the feeling is gratifying, flattering, whatever.

im not arguing any/either way, but i think most people these days do it for looks or health reasons.

thoughts? opinions?

I mostly do it for fun...I love setting pr's, and I love waking up and realizing I look bigger than the day before. I really dont give a shit what other people think, my family hasnt given me the least bit of support. Instead they tell me im getting to big, or im eating too much and im not healthy, wasting my time etc. I do know one things for certain though, I'll never stop.

be sure not to deadlift

lol.

I actually seriously thought about your point the last couple days.

But I must say that the erectors are very functional muscles and their strength does seem to translate into improved performance/protection in real sports.

Additionally I had some lower back pains that have totally disappeared since doing deads.

Thus I have decided to continue deadlifting.

I like knowing that if shit goes down, I'm by far the strongest motherfucker in the room.

Call it my need to be the Alpha male, hence my years of training to be a fighter and having no desire to make any kind of career out of it.

I hear ya, but you gotta know that the strongest or biggest dude in the room is not always the best fighter. I have seen my share of fights where a 170-pound non-lifter takes a powerlifter to school. fighting isnt about strength really, until you end up wrestling.

trust me I know exactly what you mean, I trained to be a fighter LONG before I got into heavy weight training.

There's a world if difference between vainty strong and fighter strong.

size + strenght = intimidation

skill + strenght = domination

The REAL QUESTION SHOULD BE

WHY DON'T YOU WORK OUT?

WORKOUT IS LIFE

GO HEAVY OR GO HOME

DEADLIFTS AND MILK

I workout so that when I turn 90 years old I'm not wheelchair bound, sitting in my own urine and feces waiting for someone to wipe my ass. This is also why I remain "supplement" free.

The vanity thing, of course, comes into play, as does the strength aspect of working out.

I do love to challenge myself at each workout and try to best each previous outing.

teaches me discipline and it's better than spending 3-5 nights a week at the bar. Also makes me feel good about myself.

I was kind of a dork in grade school. I have a girly sounding name. I liked to draw and quiet stuff like that. I was not athletic, not always picked last in gym class but never picked first. back then, every year we had this Presidential Physical Fitness challenge in gym class. I did terribly. I could only do one pull up. The girls could outrun me.

Also I got beat up by just about everybody. I got sick of it.

I started karate, wrestling and lifting weights at home with those cheap plastic home gym things. But I got stronger and tougher. I beat up a few kids, got a reputation. I was state wrestling champion one year (AAU), had the school high jump record, started on the basketball team and some other junk. Being athletic aided my popularity.

My wife did not believe me that I could barely squeek out one pull up in 5th grade - as I can do 10 or so with 90 LBS harnessed to me now.

I started working out because I got tired of getting picked on, getting my ass kicked, getting made fun of etfc.

I LOVE the way the human body looks when strengthened.

Bro....wtf... I didnt know you were gay... you like how your own body looks? wtf..bro...

to get as strong as possible(or beyond possible:))training makes me feel good too. it takes me away from everything, when i train nothing in the world matters for that short time.

First of all I just ate a HUGE steak dinner, So I`m not gay.

I did`nt say I liked the way MY body looks. I like the well developed human body. I`m always striving for that. If I ever get there, then YES I would like the way my own body looked. What`s wrong with that?

LOL, great Conan quote! As to why I work out:

1. I’m getting older, so I have to battle the aging process
2. To get both bigger and stronger, both are important to me
3. I want to look fantastic, yep it’s vanity
4. I like to EAT. Muscles make that easier without getting fat.

P.S. Oh yeah, it turns my wife on! ;)

I don't want to be a fat ass.

I got fat ass genes and if i don't work out like mad, i will get fat.

Looking good is just a bonus to not being fat :D

I play rugby, being strong and in shape is good,I am going through college to be a cop also, again must be in good shape as alot of my first year will be tough physically.

however I started lifitng weight to look better and keep busy because I was a loner and had no friends when I started high school. then I started looking better and it was about vanity and now I am in it for rugby and career goals as I stated above.

i used to be a chubby kid, never got pushed around or anything but i wanted to be stronger then the next guy.

I like the way my own body looks.

I stare at it for 10-20 minutes everyday. Dead serious.

Are you calling me a liar? lol

Actually, I hate steaks. I just eat them from fear of going to "the other side"

Just to be safe, Ya know.

I have to go chop firewood now.

I forgot to mention, and I'm surprised no one else mentioned this, I am addicted to the endorphins.

also it's a place where I am only my own terms. in a way I relax when I go to the gym. it's like meditation or solace.

I have two options. Let my weight get totally out of control or lift like a madman.

I’ll never have 8% bf, it’s just not going to happen but I’ll try like hell to get there.

Besides, it’s fun to watch 2 people carrying something and then when they put it down, just walk over with one arm and walk off with it.

To get bigger. There are a lot of people out there who I want to beat the living shit out of. I'm just not big enough to do it yet.

The world will be a much better place once I add on another 30 pounds or so.

I wonder if I can get to this board from jail?

Broly, I think you should concentrate on graduating from elementary school first.

exercise is as good for mood as anti-depressants. plus i need it for health reasons (everyone on my dads side of the family has type 2 diabetes). Plus i want to be muscular as possible, it makes me feel powerful and segregated for some reason.

the intensity from workint out is like none other.

vanity is key.
so is healthy.

If I stopped working out I'd look like shit.

Everythign else...setting pr's, attention from girls, better health...is all secondary (although it's nice).

So basically, my motivation is not to look like shit.
