Why do people ask this on eBay?

"What's your reserve?"

Why not just place a friggin bid?

Now I don't even answer them. There is a reason why the reserve is not made public.

I do not answer stupid questions either on ebay anymore or else it wouldn't even be worth my time to sell there.

Sometimes, I will actually state my reserve price in the auction though.

never understood why people dont just start the bidding at their reserve price...the fees for hving a reserve are basically the same as what u make up with a lower insertion price fee...its stupid

As a buyer, reserves turn me off. As a seller, I would just rather start the bidding at the least amount of money I'd not be sad to lose it over.

If it's a hot item...I start it at .99

the reason you have a reserve yet start at a low price is a sales technique called "lowballing". the principle behind this is that people bid on an item below its reserve and form an emotional connection to the idea of buying that item - they imagine buying it, having it, holding it - wahtever - and then as teh bidding heats up, theyre more inclined to keep bidding becasue of the attachment theyve formed, than if they started bidding above reserve

if yorue interested in this sort of stuff, id reccommend a book called Influence by a Dr Robert Chialdini - it talks about a lot of the sales techniques/compliance techniques used by sales professionals around the world so as to separate you from your $$

I love this kind of stuff and will check into the book. I will send a hot item to auction at a low price with reasonable shipping cost and have a duplicate item in my ebay store that no body will see or buy! The one at acution will sometimes go for some Ungodly amount due to the emotional attatchments two people will form with it during the duration of the auction.

Plus they want to "win" that item don't they ?

Last summer I "won" a car that I thought I would not win and I was like "oh shit" lol.
