I was gonna go but a jamaican coworker deterred me, told me NOT to leave the resort area on my own or to rent a car and explore, said he's seen tourists get their arms chopped off with a machete so they can take their bracelets/jewelry

Or take group tours, be careful with getting weed too, he said cops love making examples out of tourists

I was just there last year.. If you are an idiot tourist and you wear expensive jewelry and you go into the bad areas then you are looking for trouble.. expect to get robbed in any country if you do that. some of the resorts are surrounded by bad areas but they are heavily gated. but hey if you stay in the same type of resort in the US you would pay a ton more so you get what you pay for thats why the caribbean is such a good vacation plus obviously the weather and beaches..
I did a lot of walking outside the resort and rode the public bus around and never had any problems at all, granted I don't look like someone to mess with and I don't wear jewelry or flash things around... so don't let your girl by herself ever and you will be fine.
it has become modern and expensive in the past 5-10 years. you can stay at Sandals, its expensive but the food is the best and the service is top notch. plus no screaming kids running around and it isn't packed.
just some advice which i hope you take.. when you visit the Dunn Falls its awesome, just don't exit through the shops cause they will hand you things then make you pay for them. just a heads up
i still prefer DR though.. way cheaper and more poor... they will kiss your hand if you tip 5 bucks.. in Jamaica they will spit on you. the inflation is out of control over there.

^^^ on the beaches too they will hand you things and then charge you. just tell them 'no thanks mon' and they will leave you alone .. .. respect is important in jamaica.. the people will treat you like shit if you disrespect them but they will treat you like gold if you respect them. they are cool people but remember they have to feed their family so they gotta sell you stuff.
Most hate.
There are Americans who are dicks and go to other countries. The bad part is that everyone thinks that they're all like that.
well many tourists there who are white are from europe.. so no they don't just look at you and hate you. and no they don't hate americans at all. you have to remember that Jamaica was a brit colony and most jamaicans are slave descendents so there is still negativity towards white people.. but in their culture they are peace loving and no worries people...
on the resorts the people selling things are NOT allowed to set foot onto the resort unless they get permission, however they can be on their little boats and surfboards on the water so if you are swimming or on the beach/pier they will target you.
one of the dudes got on my nerves cause he wanted me to go get him some chicken from the buffet and it was my last day there.. they will get on your nerves if you talk to them so its best just to say no thanks mon and ignore them. i'm like dude its my last day here leave me alone! sheesh
