I'm thinking about picking up a night shift job at one of our local restuarants waiting tables. I need some extra cash for my bud's bachelor party in vegas and thought that this would be an easy way to get some. Any thoughts?

Sure it's a pretty fun way to make some quick cash. Depending on the type of restaurant, you can make anywhere from $50-$100 a night. Just make sure you can multi task well as you need to do a lot of different things at the same time if you're gonna get to your customers on time. You won't be making that kind of money until you get the hang of it as they will probably only give you a 1-2 table station. once you become more accustomed to it, they usually bump you up to 3-5 table stations. I always enjoyed it b/c you're running off of pure adrenaline most of the time. Most servers are easy going party people so you should get along with most of them.

A server friend of mine says take the smoking section people. They tip more. Delinquint is right, You won`t be full swing tips untill you`ve been there a bit anyway and depending on the tips.

My friend works at Red Lobster and she says "I`m so laid back and joking with everyone I get great money." good luck

Oh yea I forgot about the smoking section. Always try and get that if smoking is even permitted in your state. Depending on the place, a lot of servers get the smoking section based on seniority. Smokers almost always tip better than non smokers. Mainly b/c they tend to drink also.

If you want to make good money waiting table you will have to get a good/busy shift which means you will run your ass off the entire time but the cash you walk out with is worth it. I wait tables at a sports bar/restaurant. Last Saturday i worked 5pm till 11:30 and i made $150. We were busy as hell and i had one table that was like 20 people.

All in all, its a good and quick way to bring home the bacon.

I have served in a number of diffrent types of bars and resturants. I think if your starting off start at a chain resturant most of them give you good training and they are usually always busy. I have worked at a chain resturant I made some pretty good money there but there is way to much BS and politics for anyone to want to stick around for very long.
Places not to start off would be fine dinning and a bar. Fine dinning is not so much a rush but you have to be on the ball make sure everything is perfect it is more of an investment of your time but in the end pay out can be huge. I worked at a golf and country club not unusual at all for a memember to rack up a $1000 bill on a dinner for 4-6. You know what that means for you? $150 just from one table plus you probably have a 3 or 4 more tables with bills at a minimum of $100. Can be some sick cash but the people may get too you after a while they are rich and used to having there ass kissed.
A bar is so diffrent form the rest of serving jobs it is mad fast paced at times and you can't write anything done you have remember it all. I have found tip% to be way higher at the bar then anywhere else I have worked. On one pretty shitty night I only sold $200 but my tips from it where $80.
About the smoking thing very true they tip way better than non-smokers do they also drink more just more of a party people I guess.
