Okay..for cucumber plants....should I use chicken wire or a tomato cage to make them grow up instead of out. i know you make them climb....

Answer my freaking question stop talking about her melons

sorry GG...its Stilletos fault. hi hun. :) i know a little about climbing walls, does this help?

don't you live in metro land how the fug are you gonna have a garden?

Chicken wire wont work cause the openings are too small. However, the tomato cage may work. My neighbor grows his on his fence. I have mine sprawled out on the ground.

If you grow them against a fence, they will climb them, or just trail on the ground. You can use chicken wire if its secured to the ground, otherwise it will most likely blow away.

Try the tomato cages. If you need to tie the plants to the cages to keep them above the ground, use garden twine OR... you can use strips of old stockings - they are soft and don't hurt the plant.

btw, keep my melons out of this thread.

Where are the in the garden? If they are on a end row. You can use lattice. The wood kind that cheap vinyl crap. It won't bend over like some cages will. Heavy fruit will bend it over kind of like a leaning tower of pisa effect. Although your best beat is to leave them on the ground unless you are growing the small pickling variety.

Just use string...If you have 4 hills (or however many)...Just drive a metal fence post into the ground (about 2 dollars a piece) at each hill. Then get some heavy twine and tie it to each post going over top of the plants. Start the first row of twine about 12 inches from the ground and lift the plant up to the twine...it will wrap around and grow to it.

Once the vines start taking off, then add another row of twine about 6 inches above the first and move the end of the vine up to it...ect, ect.

I have had cukes grow completely over an 8 ft trellis, but the string idea has always worked best for me.

you could always let them grow on the ground and once they start to form put something underneath them. A tomato cage will work too, BUT, you might have to lead the plant a little so it goes up, i've seen a cage not work before, so make shure it takes to it

I don't really like to let them grow on the ground. The part that is on the ground is sometimes discolored that way. Tomato cages work fine, IMO. =-)

Okay gonna try to do this with the post and the sting....Ill let ya know lol

and stilleto I will send you the biggest one!
