Which would you prefer ladies?

I think a single rose is a really thoughtful gesture. A dozen roses sort of looks a little "stalker-ish" if this is the first time you've ever indicated an interest in the girl. It also makes one wonder if you are expecting "something" of her out of the date too. Just a thought but the single rose is a nice touch. Maybe make it a white rose.

I agree - ditch the rose thing... too cliche w/no thought.
One of the most thoughtful things a guy did for me (I had been dating him for a few weeks and were friends before.) was a beautiful bouquet of alstrameria lillies. (Which are actually quite inexpensive.)
To this day they are my favorites. Had them in my wedding (of course, my ex never knew that they were my favs because of an old beau).

Blow pops and tootsie rolls work well too.
If I have known her for some time I would bring her something that I know fits her interests.
Does she garden or like plants? Bring her a couple small plants.
Does she like to read? Bring her a book in the subject that she likes.
If it's a first date and I don't know her that well, then some daisies or maybe some wild flowers.
The key point is to make her feel special.
