Whey Protein

What makes a whey protein good? What should I be looking for aside from just protein content?

I just want to know what makes the other wheys cost more than the cheap one that I am taking and if I should spend the extra money on them. I currently take a cheap whey protein shake after a workout and MetRX protein with glutamine any other time.

Things you should be looking for are the manufacturing process as well as the actual yield of BCAA's and the 'form' in which they are yielded, i.e. isolate, concentrate, hydrolyzed, etc...

for example post workout I would highly suggest isolate or even hydrolized (also called predigested because it consists primarily of peptides hence there's no need for your body to break down aminoacids thus making a process of absorption even quicker) whey.
for the rest of the day and night opt for slow release protein: micellar casein, calcium casseinate, egg proteins - a combo of these can be cost-effective and yield the desired anticatabolic state.

also as far as price, a lot of companies overhype their products investing big capital into commercial advertising, hence a crappy concentrate whey from Met-Rx or Muscletech would cost as much as a good, and much more efficient combo of Hydrolized/isolate or Micellar/Egg proteins from smaller companies. Look into proteinfactory and proteincustomizer..

Trader Joe's Vanilla flavored Whey Protein; about $8.00

Ingredients: Whey protein complex (Whey Proein concentrate, pre-digested whey protein hydrolysates, gluatmine peptides), fructose, natural flavors, cellulose gum, xanthan gum, annatto (color)

about 16 servings per container
per serving:
calories 120
Fat 1g
total carbs 12g
sugars 7g
protein 16g

How does that sound?
