Where Did Santa Come From?

Yep.
Back in the early 1900's there was a fat fellow that had flying reindeer.
He would travel across the earth delivering presents to all the good little boys and girls.
He went by the name Wodin.

There actually was a man by the name of Kris Kringle back in like .. I forget. Looooooong time ago. Hundreds of years.

Yeah thats the guy... his nickname was Wodin.

Christos- Greek for" savior" or "anointed".

Saint Nicholas - Catholic Bishop of Myra

Ninos Jesus - Spain

Petit Noel - France

Italy - Gesu Bambino

Sinter Cleas-Denmark

Christkindl- Germany

Babushka- Russian ( who happened to be a woman gift giver!)

Thomas Nast was the first illustrator to draw "Santa".

Anyone recall who Clement Clarke Moore was?

Italy - Gesu Bambino

No gesu' bambino is Child Jesus, n Italian Santa is Babbo Natale -father Cristmas- Funny thing is, that Italy didn't have a Santa. A witch called La befana, brought presents and coal to chilldren. This is called L'epifania and it still happens to this day on Jan 6. Italy also has adopted Santa. I'm not sure when Santa was introduced though. Waay back (not sure what century) I guess people in Italy thought that a witch flying on a broom stick delivering presents and coal to children wasn't the right image for Xmas :D

Zebo wins!

I'd also be willing to bet that you read this story/poem to the lil ladies in your house each year!?

Saizen...I read that Befana got lost bringing gifts to the Christ child. Every year after that, she left gifts for other children, hoping she might find the Christ child at last.

Soooo many wonderful stories!

It's funny that this was a thread. My lil girl brought home a book about this subject from school Tuesday. We've been rading alllll the stories about Santa.

" Santa Who?" written by Gail Gibbons

Vix good to see you "RAD" with your daughter.

The funniest story ever about different cultures and their version of Santa is by David Sedaris - I've tried to find a copy of it on the web, but to no avail.
I think it is titled "Santa and his 7 or 8 large black men"

something like that. when I went to see him in person, that is one of his stories that he told, and I nearly hurt myself laughing.

while Christinaity was whoring itself out around europe, theyadopted Santa to gauin moer converts. Likewise Christmas itself, the Christmas tree and the easter Bunny.
