It asks for some network password...I do not have a network. I can I get my computer to load without asking for this damn password. I always hit cancel but it is a pain and makes my computer take longer to load...

you are getting that because you have file and/or printer sharing enabled.
if you have no need to share files or printers, then turn that off.

sounds like a win98 thing - although I haven't had my computers in a non-network scenerio in quite awhile.

usually if you can hit enter (some username with no passowrd)/cancel and everything works the same to you, then you don't need it and can disable it.
under the network options, look for file/printer sharing.

Also if its win95 i think it has Multiple User Settings, when not specified for a network, that will bring up the password thing at startup. its been a while though

Are you using a cable modem? If so, it is seeing the network. Simply hit enter or click the ok button and get right in. If not, listen to happy.

In XP there are settings to disable the password page - at least in the home version.
I don't recall where the screen is to enable/disable, but if I had to guess, I'd start by right clicking on "my computer" and if not in there, then in the system that is in the control panel

if there is only one user on your xp machine and it is not password protected, then you should bypass any login screens and go straight to the desktop

Remove file and printer sharing, microsoft network stuff etc, in NETWORK in the Control Panel. You dont need that stuff with a cable modem, just the adapter and TCP/IP.

I am running a router with my DSL. Can I still remove all sharing and network stuff? I have a LAN connection right now.

you can remove all microsoft networking and file sharing stuff if you aren't using that (meaning that you have never clicked on your network neighborhood and gone into other computers there to get shared folders and files, or used a networked printer).
all you need is the tcp/ip stuff which is how you talk to the outside world.

that said - if you have dsl - you might need the PPPoIP stuff depending on how your service does it - but you still could disable the local file and print sharing stuff.

Yep, if its a plain jane router you should be fine. If you have a PPPoE setup then some stuff needs to stay, I dont know in totality what that stuff is but basically if you have a login screen just like dialup, then you have PPPoE (which sucks). Most modern DSL connections where I live are now PPPoE, when I had it years ago it was plain jane stuff.

If you have a print server then you likewise should be fine since most of them just work on an IP address, if you have 2 or more computers at home (workgroup) then you should probably keep the login crap. If this is the case, go to Microsoft.com and search for TWEAKUI, download it, unzip it, right click on the INF file and hit INSTALL, close the help box that pops up after install, go to Control Panel > TweakUI, go to Paranoia, select CLEAR LAST USER LOGIN, and then go to LOGON tab, and select the appropriate info, and it will login for you automagically every bootup (you can still select logoff manually to select another user login).
