Whats the diff in a tailback and halfback?

Most people say they're the same thing, but I'm pretty sure they're different.

Is the tailback typically bigger and less agile?

I think there's a difference. Sounds like something out of a wishbone offense, or when a team uses 3 backs in the backfield. But I don't know which back would go where. Maybe Spatts or IronLion knows.

I totally forgot about pass catching.

I'm pretty sure Warrick Dunn is a halfback. I wonder if Jerome Bettis is a halfback (he almost always has a blocker and rarely catches passes) or a tailback (he's nearly fullback sized by RB standards).

Often Mike Alstott is called a combo tailback/fullback, he catches passes sometimes and runs out of the singleback formation somtimes.

A halfback is usually used in a wishbone offense. There would be one fullback and two halfbacks. In a two back offense there would be one fullback and one tailback.
I played tailback in high school. Everytime I stepped onto the field coach would yell "Get your tail back!".

Dial_tone hit it. It's based on formations and that leads to the players ability

Wishbone - 3 backs (1 full back and 2 half backs)
T formation - 2 backs (half backs)
I formation - 1 full back, 1 half back.

Typically a full back is about 20 - 30 pounds heavier than the half back and is a forward power runner. The Tail back is more agil runs better slants, sweeps and off tackle routes and catches better than the full back.

Or in a pro set (split backs). Usually one of the dudes is the fullback anyway though to avoid having to sub in all the time.

LOL, would your coaches have a different opinion of you now, since you've got some size on ya? Or do you think you'd still be pulled from the lineup?

If my coaches had seen me even 2 years later they would've freaked out. I had put on 20 lbs of muscle in my first year of college. It was the first chance I got to lift year round. I actually was a decent football player; I was known for being a hard hitter but I didn't have Barry Sanders agility.
I considered playing college but my school won the D-III nat'l championship my freshmen year then moved to D-II because nobody would play them. That meant scholarship players so I ran track instead.

We ran out of the I formation in high school and I was the tailback. In college, we ran out of a split backfield and both backs were referred to as halfbacks. The tailback lines up behind the fullback in the I formation.

My best memory from football was not of a long touchdown run, but the time that we were playing a high school team that Brian Bosworth played on. I don't remember Bosworth, but they had an all state defensive tackle named Jerry Grumbine, weighed 275.
We ran a pass play and I took a fake handoff out of the I formation, I had a burst of speed, plus I was very strong at 165 pds., I put my facemast right in Grumbine's chest and knocked him right on his ass. I heard him scream out in pain on his way down. I'll never forget it.

I never heard of him, did he end up anywhere?

Umm, I would hope not as his a$$ got owned by a 165lb running back!

One has "tail" preceding the "back" while the other has "half".
