The water extract from the dry leaves of this plant is commonly known as tea and contains many compounds including a mixture of polyphenolic catechins (this is what makes tea bitter). Many of these polyphenols possess better antioxidant activity than the well known antioxidants such as vitamin C and E. Of course you guys know that antioxidants are agents which counteract the damaging oxidant radicals, known to play a role in many disease processes, produced in the body.
Recent data suggest that epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCg), the major polyphonic antioxi-dant present in green tea may possess both preventive and therapeutic potential against human cancer.
They have also found that EGCG inhibits mRNA expression for MMP-2 and MMP-9, but not for MMP-14, at a nanomolar level, which can explain at least partly the mechanism by which green tea inhibits metastasis in the animal system.
Green tea extract also has potent anti-bacterial/viral/microbial properties. In 1988 researchers discovered that green tea immobilized cholera vibrios within several seconds and agglutinated them. They found that bacteria that caused food poisoning such as v. parahemolyticus, salmonella, e.coli and various staph bacteria that were resistant to antibiotics were affected by distrupting the cell membrane. Viruses such as influenza and rotavirus were especially affected. It was shown to inhibit the infectivity of the virii by acting like antibodies (the catechin) instantly attaching to the virus, thus rendering it harmless.
It has also been shown that many anticancer drugs induce apoptosis of cancer cells. EGCG and its derivatives can induce apoptosis in several types of cancer cells including human histiolytic lymphoma U937 cells, human stomach cancer KATO-III and MKN-45 cells, and human colon cancer WiDr cells. Non-dialysable fractions from green tea, black tea, and oolong tea also exhibited the apoptosis-inducing activity. These results suggest that drinking tea is effective for prevention of stomach and colon cancers.
Also, the apoptosis-inducing activity of catechin compounds is dependent on their polyphenolic structure. Thus, it may be useful for developing anti-cancer agents on the basis of apoptosis-induction.
I wouldn't see any harm being done by taking green tea supplements. It would increase your immune system, especially now that its winter. You can't afford getting sick while on a cycle! I would also imagine that it would protect your organs -liver, kidneys, and prostate from damage and potenial cancer.
