What would you do?

Scenerio- Your son has been taken to the hospital for an arm injury. Doctor says. Your son has broke his radius and ulnar. The Doc gives you some options. 1. we can take him to the OR, put him under anesthesia and brake it back in place. 2. we can put an IV in him, medicate him-and brake it back in place. 3. Or we can just hurry up brake it back inplace and be done with it. I picked one of the three. just wondering if i made the right decision.

How old is your son? I had to have my broken arm fixed when I was a kid and was put under when I was 10. It was not a problem at all. I would want to fix it with as less pain as possible!

HES 13. AND YOU ARE NOT MAKING ME FEEL BETTER.

Honestly I would probably do the putting to sleep route. If not general at least do local. I wouldn't want my child to remember that experience of having his arm put back in place. I am glad I didn't experience that. I was out and I woke up with a cool cast and that was it.

ekkkk, let him stay awake. Kids need to know what suffering really is

kidding, get that child put to sleep

2) Give him a shot of morphine and then snap it back in place

When I was young I broke my wrist and that is what they did. It still hurt but the morphine made it so I didn't care.

definately 1.

It would be pretty safe, and save him from pain and trauma.

Id go with #1
if he's under anesthesia no chance he would feel it while they were doing it - but still scary all around no matter what choice you make
how awful
hope your son is ok

I guess beingthe ER nurse,i thought it wasgoingtobe traumatic either way wewent. and i know in my past cases of reducing femurs-that after you reduce that fracture. the pain goes away. He started crying when the doc said "we can put an IV in". so i just thought lets get it over with. It was quick-but by his reaction-notpainless. I felt bad. "i think maybe in the back of my mind, i thought my son was more of a tough guy". And sometimes kids dont handle anesthesia well. And i wanted to be present if anything went south. I cant go to the OR with him, and i didnt really trust the on call surgeon. Maybe i did make the wrong decsion. My profession probably hurt my ability to make a better decision formy son. Im not sure

well he's ok now, so it's alright.

why couldn't you go to the ER with him?

NUMBER ONE!

Actually, this exact scenario happened to me. It was my then live in bf's son who broke his wrist, both bones. They put him under, put his fingers up in this finger trap thingy, and then had to put weights on his elbows to stretch the arm enough to set the bones. Even though he was under, the kid was screaming and moaning while unconscious, but he didn't remember a bit of it when he woke up.

What ever is cheaper.

Ahh the wonderfull world of fentanyl. Yeah his brake was the same, it was a clean brake. It only took 3 seconds to reduce. literally 3 seconds. as oppose to 4 hours of prep. procedure, and post op for getting anesthesia. I will ask him in a few years how he felt about the whole ordeal. Im being generous with the codeine!! hope he takesthat in to account!!

Hey, we do the best we can as parents to make the right decisions. You did what you felt was best! =-)

At 13 you should have asked him for some of his input, he's old enough to talk rationally about stuff like that. Now it's done, you should have the courage to sit down and explain your actions to him.

He went through pain because of a choice you made with the best of intentions. He'll live, it's over, no use guilting yourself.
