What I do when sick:
-tons of water... go way overboard. The only limit is death...(j/k)
-5g of vitamin C per day
-lots of B vitamin complex pills (you should feel more cheery and energetic from this) per day
-multivitamin
-possibly a chinese herbal formulation for flu or cough during the day. This will usually have a small dose of ephedrine in it. Don't take it at night. If you have night coughs, tell a Chinese doctor, as there are some decent herbal formulations for that. You would take it about an hour after your last meal, a little bit before bed.
-Eat poultry, fish and vegetables of all kinds. Get tons of nutrients from food, real animal meat and fiber from vegetables. Consume ample low-glycemic carbs. Try to at least maintain your weight, as annoying as that may be. Your body needs energy and real nutrients most easily gotten from real food. I think foods like brown rice, chicken and veggies give your body good nutrients and a constant energy supply
-don't eat any sugar, milk, or very spicy food. I know it may sometimes feel like a damn hot curry somehow cleanses you but in the long run it won't help. Don't eat fruit (eat veggies, though).
-sleep for a loooong time at night in a warm and constant temperature environment. If you wake up, drink some water, but don't let yourself get cold for even an instant!
-Take a damn hot shower for 45 minutes morning and night (right before bed)
-go out and do something every day. If you work, that is enough. Your brain needs to be kept stimulated. Don't overdo it, though.
-relax as much as you can.
-talk a little, but not too much. Your throat needs to be left alone to fight this virus.
-it might peak, then decline. Be happy when it gets really damn bad (if it gets that far). You may wake up one morning feeling like death, but after taking a shower feel almost cured.
When you start feeling better, it is hard to judge whether you should work out or not. In some cases, yes. Others, no. You may just have a residual cough that should largely be ignored.
However, DON'T lift weights before it either peaks or gets significantly better. At that point you can do an easy workout, and it may even help.
