What makes you want to tip your server ALOT?

I'm a server, and I still can't figure out why people tip the way they do.

There are times when everything is perfect and I get a shity tip, and there are times when everything goes to hell and I get tipped alot.

So, what makes you tip well or not? But especially, what makes you want to give your server a BIG tip?

Cleavage goes a long way. So does good service, helpfullness, courtesy, a nice smile, ect.

Some people are just cheapskates though and are incapable of tipping well.

Just do your job well, and be invisible. Don't ask if everything is OK. If it is not, you'll be the first to know. Don't return to the table with our food and ask who gets which item. You took the order---YOU remember. Do all that and you get 20%.

I've been a bartender on & off now for about 5 years, so I usually tip big no matter what(because Im in the industry), but what I look for in a server is this: PERSONALITY. I dont mean that they have a joke ready all the time, but rather that they are just nice. I could care less if the food sucked(which some moron customers blame on the server, as if they cooked it too right?), the service was slow, or she spilled hot coffee on me. As long as he/she is trying their best(I know how hectic working in a restaurant can be), and is a nice person, they will get a really good tip. The flip side of that coin being; a server who is robot-like efficient & everything is there fast, but is rude, throws your food at you, never smiles, or whatever. That shit can ruin your night! That person will get %15 to the PENNY! Jen, I've also found that the opposite sex(or the same sometimes)will tip big because they HONESTLY think that it will get them in your pants & when they find out you dont want them then BAM--no more tip for you! I'd give you a big tip hon.;)

Thats totally how I am! I don't expect everything to be perfect every time I go out to dinner, but I do expect my server to be polite and if they do mess up, FIX IT! I'm pretty easy to please as long as I can tell my server is trying.

you would give me a big tip? :D Thanks! Where are you when i need you damn it! lol

I get pretty good tips, but there are times when I'm like "what the hell?"

I have had some pretty funny situations of guys hitting on me. It always makes me feel weird. This on group of guys said "oh, I thought your phone number would be on the check"---what the hell did they expect me to say?

The tip depends on the service, food, and feeling like you are not interupting the staff by being there.
But everything could be great, but the tip is lousy, because you just served one cheap bastard.

You guys who tip based on weather or not you liked the food need to realize that the friggin server doesn't prepare the shit for you......they just bring it out! Not to mention that they are the ones who have to hear y'all bitchin if you DIDN'T like the food, and then try to make you happy, while ALSO trying not to tell you that they actually have COOKS there that do that job ya know?! In that case, you should tip the hell out of them for not telling you how STUPID you are. Granted, if you dont like the food, you have the right to complain POLITELY, and a good server will get the manager who SHOULD comp you if there was a problem. But again, a TIP should be based on how enjoyable a server attempted to make your dining experience for you on that night. They dont have control over every little thing that goes on in the place for Gods sake!

I was just out with my wife at a restaurant. We waited 45 minutes for our food!!!!!!!!!!!!! The place was not full at all. We gave the waitress a very good tip. WHY?, even though the food was late, I could see her concern for us......we never had to ask for drink refills, she was polite and very professional. She must have check our food 20 times. To me if the food sucks, I will not go back, but I will not take it out on the staff. Sometimes we go out, are seated, order taken, and food brought to our table and that's the last you see of them.............that equals a bad tip.

Also people who have worked in the business will tip more generally because they know what it's like to not make any money.

What this dude said!!! The best service is the service you don't see or notice. Ex. When i was eating at a very nice retsaurant i turned to say something to my partner and when i turned back around my drink was full and they had taken my empty plate away....that person received a 20% tip... which ir rare for me because i always give 15%. I just hate when they bitch about getting 15%, like when the tip turns out to be like $1.50, shit... if you don't like your job then get another one.

As long as they keep my drink filled, they will always get a nice tip.

I worked in a fine dining restaurant as a food server for many years. So, I ALWAYS leave a big tip. No exceptions.

My theory is if a person can't afford to leave the minimum tip of 15%, than they should eat fast food! :D

Seriously?? Up here, in the land of no return, we don't have to tip at Subway!?!

Fine restaraunts vs crummy ones.....

Most here can make the distinction between the 2. To me it doesn't matter male vs female. It's the service and the connection between the diners and servers.

An excellent server makes you feel like you are the most important diners in the restaraunt. Your water glass is always filled, your bread basket is never empty, your food arrives all at once, and you are never hurried.

If a server goes out of their way to make the dining experience a memorable one, then they get a huge tip from me (25%+)

Plus its a combination of everyone in the restaraunt. Everyone has to work together. If one falls down, the others are affected.

The great ones work as a team.

It all depends on the subway. Since they are franchised, the owner of the local stores can decide if they'll allow a tip jar.

The food matters, I am not about to go dish out money for a steak that sucks or is overcooked, I like mine med-rare. The server can correct this and earn bonus points by doing so.

I ussually tip around 20%. I ain't bright enough to always figure out the 15 deal. But service matters, because if it really sucks I might not leave a damn thing.

And if I am at Hooters looks do matter. Damn glad they went against that guy sueing them for not letting him be a waitress. And cleavage matters there too, thats why they call it Hooters

I don't believe in tipping, i believe in over-tipping hehehe

But if the service sucks and the people are rude, fuck them, they wont get shit from me.

I want to tip, so give me a good reason too. Cause when I tip good, I know they wont forget me next time I go, and that makes my whole eating experience more enjoyable. Plus I always ask for my stuff to be prepared a certain way for BB purposes.

Under the counter blowjobs count for gratuity(?) yes no?

"I'd go over 10% for that" ;)

Seriously though I can only speak for myself. I like to leave big tips. Not that I am a big spender or anything. But if a server does a good job I like to tip them accordingly. Actually some of it has to do with me being lazy. Whenever I pay with cash I usually just pay with 20's....so the tip could easily be $10-15. Now if the service was completely horrible...then I will actually wait for change and only give the minimum.

Oh Jenn...those times that you do a good job and dont get a good tip. Well there are cheap people everywhere. I had a roomate once that would have given tips in change if he could...but I always threw some money in...damn he was a cheap bastard.

Of course...as shallow as it is to admit. A big smile and big "personalities" go along way towards making up for service. Sad but true....if you got it ...use it ;)

For me it's all about the service. I'm not there to be entertained or to have a conversation with the waiter.

I hate: "Is everything OK?" because I'm forced to hurry up my chewing and swallowing to say "YES IT'S FINE GO AWAY THX."

I hate having to act like a watch tower to ask for the bill or a refill of my water or dessert.

Waiter should attempt to be in plain sight and keep looking towards the table so that I can just wave him over.

Another big no-no is carding me when I ask for a drink. That kills about 5-10% unless the service is exemplary.

I had excellent service the other night at Chili's. Food came in under 15 minutes... steak was perfect... I didn't get carded when I asked for my drink... I didn't get bombarded with "IS EVERYTHING OK???"... bill came promptly and waiter collected my American Express card in seconds.

He got his good tip. $

TIps:

I have a general rule. If my cup is EMPTY for more then 5 minutes I get mad and tip less. If the waitress stops by my table constnatly and asks me if I am fine... I LIKE that, and I tip more. If my waitress hooks me up with MORE food, I really like that, and will definatly tip them a TON! So hook you customers up with extra fries more bacon strips and tell them about it... that reallly helps the tips.

the only things that keeps me from tipping well is if my drink is not constantly fefilled, the server is rude, or i have to wait a fricken hour to get the bill.

I work for a restaurant company, which makes me:

(A) more aware of the conduct of the staff
(B) more inclined to tip well, although I've always considered myself a decent tipper.

Things I look for? Drink refills, like everyone else said. The best servers I've ever had manage to refill your drinks without you noticing. I appreciate the stealth servers.

Timing is big too. It seems like a lot of servers manage to come by and ask you how your food is just after you've taken a bite.

Something else is when the server tries to be TOO friendly. Unless the customer strikes up a personal conversation with you, disclosure of personal details just comes across as creepy.

If the food is served hot, and the orders are right, that's a big thing too. If the order comes out wrong, and the server doesn't notice and has to be told, that's kind of a minus.

Fair or not, if the food's bad, I think people generally don't tip as well. It's not the server's fault, but it makes an impact. I think those people who have waited table before will overlook it, but most people don't, IMHO.

Don't bring my food out while I'm still eating the appetizer and refill my drink when I'm low and I'll be happy. Don't ask me if everythings okay as I have food in my mouth and look at me with a cute little smile expecting me to be able to reply without spitting up cheese fries.

I tip very good when I go out. However if during my whole stay you're impossible to find and I don't get any refills, you get nothing.

When I ask for the bill and you take 30 minutes to return, you get nothing.

If I ask for the bill, you give it to me and then disappear for 30 minutes while I sit at my table with a credit card in my hand, you get nothing.

Sounds pricky but if you suck at your job, don't blame me.

"stealth" coffee and water refills, neat & clean personal hygine, polite, well-spoken manners, a good lookin' body helps but doesn't matter if hygine and manners aren't good.

Being a server, you have to be able to "read" your guests. If I have a table of business men or women who have papers all over the table, and they are obviously having a meeting, I hardly talk to them.....BUT I do walk by their table all the time, and refill drinks as much as I can, just so they know I'm there If I need them.

If I'm serving people that are just there to have a good time, I get more personable.

If someone looks like they have been crying or something, I don't come up with a huge smile and try to sell every thing on the menu.

But its hard to read people at times----so I just give them service that I would expect to be given if I went out.

I always ask if I can take their plate----even if there is only a tad bit of food left. People get pissed if you take their plate and they
are not done, I have found that out, lol. So I always ask.

I'd prolly tip you extremely well Jen... first off you aren't exactly hard on the eyes, and after talking to you online, and reading all your diary entries on your bfl page it seems like you are pretty genuine... a smile will get you farther than a nice rack anyday especially with those guys like me who do walk upright and such :)

I used to be a server (hated it) and a bartender (was ok). The only thing I really had to work at was being outgoing. Not easy, when you're a social misfit like me. :)

I guess when I leave a big tip, it has more to do with the server's personality than anything else. It helps if it's a cute girl and she flirts with me (I won't lie about that), but as long as she's doing her job, keeps my drink filled, friendly, etc...then she'll get a good tip.

Reminds me of a quote from Resivoir Dogs....in the restaraunt in the beginning.

Mr. Pink..."Fuck all that...I mean I'm very sorry that the government taxes their tips...that's fucked up...that aint my fault...I mean it would appear that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis I mean if you show me a piece of paper that says the goverment shouldn't do that and I'll sign it put it to a vote and I'll vote for it...what I won't do is play ball...and this non college bullshit you're given me I got two words for that learn to fuckin type because if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big fuckin surprise."

Obviously Mr. Pink is the kinda guy that you dont want at your table if you are a server.

heehee.

The GEICO commercial..

the guy looks at his sandwich, then the waitress, and says "I asked for no mayo" and the waitress grabs the bread and rubs the mayo off with the edge of the table and puts the bread back on the sandwich...

hahaha!
