What makes someone an alcoholic?

I say someone who just drinks socially on the weekends, whether they drink a bottle of liqour, a case of beer or a 40, cannot be considered an alcoholic.

That is my situation. Whenever the weekend has something in store, I drink. I drink a liter of rum. But only on the weekends when I'm going out because without it I'm kinda shy and quiet.

Am I a fucking alcoholic? I say no. High tolerance, yes. Alcoholic, no.

i say its when it affects your life. like if you go to class drunk. if your drinking just to do regular activities. if you just drink when your going out at on weekends i dont see that as being an alcoholic. my friend was trying to be a drunk once and what he did was drank during the week but just before bed. thats bullshit. i said if you want to be a drunk you have to do it in the mornings!!!

When it causes legitamate damage to any part of yours or others lives.
And that means 1 drink or a 100 a day.

By the way I respect anyone who quits but I have a real problem with people who use the "disease" excuse as a crutch

Cancer is a disease! Sticking a substance in your body that does not agree with you mentally, physically or whatever is a habit.

its hard to say. technically, if you use recreational drugs 1x a month you are a drug 'addict'. but cigarettes & caffiene, even when you start to go into shakes from lack of reinforcement, is ok.

i'd say either when

1. your normal physical & psychological functions require alcohol, and going without alcohol causes mental & physical stress

2. when it affects your life in a moderately/highly negative way and you still don't give it up.

We were told in school that you're an alcoholic when you drink everday. Thats an opinion in my book. A very shitty one at that. I say you're an alcoholic when you can't function properly without it, and it affects yourself, and others around you.

Alcoholic = you can't put the drink down.

If you were to put a tall glass of something down in front of me right now, I could easily say "no thanks." The alcoholic whether he has a BA level of 0.0% or 99.99% will never say no to that drink.

pretty soon you'll start doing the unprocessed and uncut fresh shit.
them things do a number on the sinus cavity.

and then all of the cyanide in the pits builds up over time.

all in all - I'd switch to cherries were I you.

Tell me about it, I had to be taken into the ER from the time I got ahead of myself and injected prune juice into my jugular.

Cherries it is.

After this last bump of A.

Does it affect your life? Or those around you?

My brother is an alcoholic who has no clue that he is.

Sucks for my family.

1. you find yourself drinking by yourself
2. You can not have just one drink
3. drinking starts affecting your lifestyle, relationship with others, and your occupation

my father is an alcoholic, it's hard.

I agree, it's not a disease. This is an exuse drunks use so they don't get fired or held accountable for their actions. You want to stop? Stop! I can't see how anyone can go to these meetings and listen to one sorry story after another. Get yourselves away from alcoholics and your recovery would be much faster.

When you can not control or stop drinking at any time. That means, if you "only" drink on Friday or Saturday night and the next morning you are lying in the bath tub surrounded by your own puke (and next to an ugly midget), you have a problem.
