what is "synthroid"

Synthroid is T4 the inferior proponent to T3. Not very useful because you have to multiply the dosage by about 4 to have the potency of T3

Spot on Namu, a question I could answer!

My wife takes synroid/oroxine/thyroxine whatever you want to call it. Yep, T4 - does the same job, but doses as namu said.

She get bottles for AU$11 so its pretty cheap here - easy to get.

Haven't played with it, but a friend of mine is going to give some a go.

I had thyroid cancer a few years back and had a complete thyroidectomy. I now take 250mcgs of Synthroid daily. It is identical to T4 and is less active than T3, which is called Cytomel. It seems that the primary function of these substances is to regulate metabolism.

T4 does a few things in its original state, but is converted to T3 (I believe in the liver) and that is why you need more T4 than T3 to see noticable results.

Be careful when using any Thyroid drug as it will not only screw up your thyroid gland, but your pituitary as well doe to the lack of TSH production caused by the constant overload of T4 and/or T3 in your system...
