What is an abscess and how can it be fixed?

Everyone should know injections should be done in a sterile way. This means cleaning not only your skin, but the top of the vial with alcohol.

If you have sweaty skin, there's bacteria on the surface, and stabbing it through, delivering it into your body isnt a good idea. Subcutaneous or IM is a dark, warm home for bacteria to grow...and it will.

Don't lick the top of the vial...I've heard of a fool doing that. Just because spit is clear, doesn't mean its clean. The mouth/saliva is the breeding ground of countless bacteria.

An abscess is the infection that occurs under the skin. whether its subQ or IM..doesn't matter. Its an infection protected by the durable, rubbery top layer of skin. The only way to get it out is by allowing a doctor to hack at you blindly or to use a pin to suck out the infection. I'd go the least invasive route myself. In most cases the abscess will be painful, easy to locate, and under pressure. This means once the blister of infection is located, it may to some degree come rushing out providing relief. I wouldn't expect a doctor to be empathetic with your cause or to care about your comfort given the stigma about self-treatment and perceived steroid use. They won't care if you're legitimately allowed and prescribed these hrt medicines, and I can guarantee 99% of the time they will see you as a "big tough guy" abusing drugs that deserves a little bit of pain and a scar to boot. I disagree. You shouldn't be forced to have a lifelong scar for a moment of stupid technique and your manliness and pain tolerance shouldn't be tested just because you look like you could lift the doctors jag off the ground.

Solution: make sure your doctor plans to drain you with a needle, no knife or do it yourself carefully. I personally prefer hurting myself. It seems to hurt less.

this is mainly due to cleanliness, how many people here have gotten them?

I've never had one (from an injection or any other accidental cause)... Only ones I've had were from two root canal jobs that went bad.

If you get one in the muscle, as CheapPinz says, you might need it lanced and drained if it doesn't respond quickly to antibiotics. And just FYI: Local anaesthetic doesn't work so well when there's an abscess! Get ready to fully feel a scalpel and a few metal instruments. If it's a deep abscess, they might have to put in a penrose drain, which is a small rubber hose from the middle of the abscess through the skin to keep it drained.

The moral of the story is; PRACTICE SAFETY and you won't need to worry about abscesses, as a rule! Alcohol swabs are cheap.

Ive had them twice. Once in the tricep and once in the quad. Drained them both myself and all was good. Both times I got them from using winni. I won't use winni anymore.
