What do you think of this job?

I'm in a position to make a job out of selling a good product (Cutco Cutlery), however, during training it seems the trainer is talking up the position to be a lot more profitable than it typically is. Especially for a college town where the market for kitchenware is everyone but college age people. It involves calling people and getting an appointment to demonstrate the product to them, and basically the more appointments you have the better your chances of making money. Getting sales would depend upon the amount of contacts you have through recommendations from previous people you have made a sale/presentation with. Being a college student, (which is the demographic this company targets to be their sales reps), and being quite a ways from home, it seems to be a difficult task to build up enough referrals, (leads) to make potential sales. For example, if I had 20 appointments/wk, I would be making $265 a week base pay, or a percentage commission on how much product $$ I sell; whichever would be more.
The team trainers give plenty of examples of their reps making good money, but it seems a little far fetched. Getting 20+ appointments per week, every week, with potential buyers simply through word of mouth. If I knew that there were enough people who wanted to buy, I would have no problem going to them all and selling to them. But I have a hard time thinking this would be reliable, steady income.
Obviously, if you had salesmanship in your blood, this job could have more potential, and I'm sure it could have it's good weeks. However, it would still be difficult to maintain a steady income simply based on customer referrals.
