What do gang signs mean?

When you see the boys in the hood making these hand gestures, what exactly are they signaling? Are they saying things like "Hey yo, let's go to White Castle and get some sliders, Yo"? What exactly do these things mean?

like where I grew up, the gang was West Side Wilmas, so the gang sign was the generic W that you see everyone do (no the Clueless one). The rival gang was East Side Wilmas, they made an E by extending the thumb and middle finger wide and the index finger straight. When people from Wilmas shake hands they end it by making W. Each person stick out their thumb and index finger (like a play gun) ina 45 degree angle and makes the dub. Another Rival gang, Rancho San Pedro, made an R by putting the tips of the index finger and thumb together and putting it in between the middle and ring fingers which are spread ina a sort of peace sign.
