two years ago, i could drink milk with no problems. a few months ago, i started to notice some abdominal discomfort after drinking milk. it seeemed that it was getting worse and worse. today, i had a glass of milk and my stomach is killing me. why is this causing me problems now? i thought lactic intolerance was something youre born with

lactase production(the enzyme that breaks down Lactose, the sugar in milk) in humans starts to decline as early as age 2, depending on the individual. Most adults, if they consumed enough dairy products, would probably find that they suffered from some degree of lactose intolerance.

Oh. I just googled it for him, not familiar with the site but the info seemed accurate.

yossarian said it. it's just a lack of the lactase enzyme. lactase levels can decrease as you age, so you'll have more and more trouble as you get older.

i'm somewhat lactose intolerant, and still pretty young, but i definitely notice a difference between now and when i was a kid. also, if i consume dairy products for a while, then start again, i get real bad gas at first, but then i get accustomed to the dairy.

Galactose, is not normally found in nature, but is mostly hydrolyzed from the disaccharide lactose, which is found in milk.

I've done so...I cheated though, lactose free milk.

Basically lactose intolerance is caused by the absense or insufficient amounts of the lactase enzyme. You're shit out of luck unless you supplement it or have lactose-free dairy (which is double the price). I'm lactose intolerant too so I feel your pain. I don't know the exact physiology, I'm thinking that since there is no lactose to cleave the sugar-galactose complex the bacteria in the gut can chomp down on the actual lactose molecule and start secreting gases and toxins. Is lactose a beta glycosidic linkage? I totally forgot my basic biochem.

Yeah that doesn't count. The average person will be totally fucked up less than half way through.

Stress is another reason. A year and a half ago i couldn't drink more than 4oz of milk or any citrus fruits. when my life changed and the stress went away i now drink 24oz at once w/o any problems. I can eat oranges without any problems now too.
