Well, I think this is weird....I filed for unemployment yesterday (as req'd by my company) and the requirement for unemployment is one must be "actively" seeking employment & must have 1 contact with a potential employer per week.

Now, if I'm sending out resumes how can I control whether or not I go on an actual interview?? I think that's a pretty stupid requirement to a certain extent.....

here's what you do.

put in an application at McDonalds.

next week, Arbys.

Following week, Burger King.

i know, i know, you must spread your karma around before giving it to crak600 again.

All you do is sit down w/the phone book and fill in the contact info to the form. Say you called company XZY and asked if they were hiring. No need to waste time and money actually sending out resumes if you aren't really actively seeking employment. How is anyone ever going to see if YOU actually ever contacted these companies?

I've been on unemployment twice in the past and never heard the one about one interview a week. They're gonna send you a form that asks if you looked for work and if you refused any work. Just say yes and move on.

thats all you need to do. i was unemployed for a month when i moved to vegas. they dont have enough resources to keep proper tabs on you

tell a friend when the unemployment office calls they have to answer the phone and say 'vandalay industries'

Yeah, so far as I know, you're not required to go on interviews...just apply or submit a resume.

My mom ran a bookstore, and used to get people coming in all the time looking for work simply because they knew she wouldn't be hiring. She refused to sign the paperwork.

yes, non interviews needed. Actually, out here, you just mark 7 yes/no boxes and sign the slip and mail it in every two weeks.

I'm lucky i guess.I have never been unemployed for more than a week between jobs.
I have been at my current job for 11 years.

You have to have the potential employer sign something for you?

When I got unemployment I just needed to fill it out myself, I would look in the Yellow pages and just write some bussiness down. They never checked.

Here's what I have to do: The week after the week I'm claiming unemployment I call in the next week (ie call in Sunday 5/30 for the week of 5/23-5/29) and call a # & answer all these questions.....Press 1 if you actively sought work; then Enter or say the date of your employer contact; press 1 if you refused any work or failed to go for a scheduled interview or press 2 if you did NOT refuse any work or fail to go for a scheduled job interview.....

The booklet they gave me (cuz Gawd Forbid they actuall explain things to you!) says "You will be required to make at least on e work search contact each week, and indicate the employer name, address, type of work sought, result of the contact and the date.......a new work contact must be made on a weekly basis....

What I have an issue with is that I personally have no control over whether I am granted an interview or not.....I just think it's kinda dumb....

You saying this reminds me of the part in American Beauty where Kevin Spacey quits his job & goes to work at Mr. Smiley Burgers or whatever it's called......his interview was hilarious!!

i dont think that by "work contact" they necessarily mean a formal interview. Contact could be you sent your resume or talked to them by phone, I think.

I agree, have you voiced this concern with the person who told you this?

Nope, it's in the booklet.....I don't think the unemployment office actually answers questions around here.....they gave me the booklet & sent me off....

Worse than the darn DMV....

I would just stick to my guns and keep doing what you`re doing. If there`s a problem, they`ll let you know.

Never had experience with this though.... What else can you possible do?

My wife is Canadian and I know of some up there who have made an art form of this. Knowing who is not hiring, so they can drop applications indefinitely and remain on "poagie". I don't like it. I can't see how you'll get far in life this way.

I would think sending a resume counts as a "contact".

I think seeing a job posting online counts as a contact....after all, my eyes contacted the job ad. :)
