I have a debate coming up....have to defend the position that the practice of "whistleblowing" does NOT reduce unethical decision making by corporate management.

You seem like a pretty smart guy...except that one time you gave coohhandluke the thumbs up a few years back....so you owe me one;)

Your side has a lot of ammo. A whistleblower is a very rare creature (like a unicorn) that is rarely seen and only significant in each individual case (without affecting the corporate management as a whole). The fact that corporate management never expects to be caught is one reason why unethical behaviour will not be curtailed by a few whistleblowers.

Imagine if a whole herd of wilderbeasts just stopped running when a lion picked of one of its members. That is the same as all corporate managers being honest because one guy was busted by a whistleblower. The herd keeps going because they know that they have the power of numbers on their side. This does not factor in the ingrained arrogance and inflated egos that many of these corporate managers possess.

This was a quick reply, but tell me if you need more.

I truly hope you are either kidding or clueless...

Thanks...

That makes total sense. The way I'm going to approach it is the "ego" mindset of a criminal outweighs the risk of being caught, rarely do they think about potential consequences before they act. I also wonder if I should add some information about the the whistleblowers themselves and how they wind up with more problems as a result of coming forward.

Thanks again, any input is helpful.

The main deterrent for whistleblowers is the fact they will lose everything and never work in that industry again.

There are a few scientific studies that prove that most (~90%) of people convicted of crimes never thought that they would get caught. That is why more jail time for many crimes does not reduce crime rates.
