Lesbian Health Net is an on-line health community dedicated to the health of lesbians and those who love them. Lesbian Health Net is packed with up-to-date health news, information and advice about taking care of the health you have - and improving upon it. You can read articles, ask questions, get solid answers - and benefit from the decades of both personal and professional experience of the health experts and other women who contribute to Lesbian Health Net.
As a lesbian, you should be asking yourself this question as you read this: What's so unique about lesbian health that a separate site should be devoted to it? Aren't all women's health issues also lesbian health issues?! Yes, but that's just the basic starting point to lesbian health.
In general, lesbians are happy and well-balanced women who contribute greatly to our society. Let's keep ourselves that way - and healthy too. I want lesbians to think about their health in a positive way - to know how to take care of it, to improve it, to seek help for it, and to treat it as a most precious resource. Without your health, who are you?
In my professional practice, I have worked closely with thousands of men and women - gay and straight. In my personal life, I've interfaced with a wide variety of women - from Olympic athletes to police officers to polo players to women who are playing the sperm game. From all that experience, I can tell you that as a group, lesbians take less care of themselves. They may not be able to tell you the last time they saw a gynecologist, or decided to quit smoking, or went on a good diet to lose that extra roll around the middle, or designed a plan to get stress levels down to manageable levels, or created a personal health improvement plan before marching out the door to find a 'healthy' sperm donor to start a pregnancy - or contemplated the dreaded 'M' word (no - not marriage.......menopause).
I want lesbians to think about their health in a positive way - to know how to take care of it, to improve it, to seek help for it, and to treat it as a most precious resource. To enjoy the process, and the results of improved sexuality, energy, vitality, and health. Without your health, who are you?
*To keep our words simple, we use a broad definition of the word 'lesbian' on Lesbian Health Net. It includes all women who identify themselves as lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, or with a similar term.
