Water, why will it help?

I have heard sooooo much about people saying you need to drink 1-2 gallons of water a day while you are cutting. Why? What exactly does it do?

The more water you take in, the less water weight your body holds. Same strategy as eating smaller more frequent meals.
 
My understanding is that water also helps flush out the kidneys from the high protein, low carb phase of cutting.
 
Water has not really been proven to make one lose more weight (other than the temperature change the water forces on the body if it is cold water). However, it keeps your body and muscle cells hydrated. Even slight dehydration has been shown to cause fatigue. Furthermore, water is used by the body for many functions, and since diets are hard on the body, water is essential for good health. Since dieting makes one not retain water as easily as when bulking, it is especially important to drink water while cutting.
