Warning for you Tanners

I just found out recently that I have malignant melanoma on several places on my body including right next to my pecker. Tanning is no joke fellows. If you tan consider getting yourself checked by a dermatologist at least once yearly. It may save you life. I think it did mine.

I am 29 and I have done it off and on for about 8 years,,, Usually in the winter I was only getting in a couple of times a month and in the summer 3 or 4 times a week... Nothing extreme that is why it was a shocker to me...

Thanks a ton guys,,,, fyi,,, the doc told me that if you if you have freckle easily you are at risk and should avoid the sun as much as possible. I have average to a dark color tone of skin so I dont fall into that catagory so much. He also said blonds and redheads are more likely to get it

I hope you caught it early and all works out. Keep us updated with treatment progress. Also might want to do a search for supplements that help aid in he fighting of cancer. I believe Fonz had a good list of supps to follow. Good luck and think positively.:)

I have moles like a bastard on my back... check that too... if you are moley... (just laughed at Austin Powers :) ) then make sure to have them checked out by the doc as well...

I hope everything works out bro. What type of treatments do they have planned for you? Kimo(sp?)?. Radiation? Both?

By the way, I have been using the spray beds for a couple of months now, with excellent results. I actually keep a tan longer with the spray bed, when I am only tanning enough to keep some color, which is usually once per week. Since the spray beds are $25/session though, I have had to cut sessions back to every other week. It is fast, and there are no ultraviolet rays involved whatsoever.

Watch moles carefully. I had one on my arm and it changed shape one week and I thought this can't be good. Went to the doctor said " This doesn't look good what do you think?" He looked at it for about 2 seconds and said "that's got to go". Turned out fine but moles need to watched carefully for any changes in color, size, shape etc.

My wife and I tried the spray beds, but it left us both with an orange tint. We have been using this stuff called Fake N' Bake that you rub on yourself and it works very well. I am a blonde, so I need to be extra careful. About once a week I go tan in one of those new beds that don't have the UB rays that will burn you, but I still don't think those are very safe.

Good thing you caught it. :)

I tanning place in my town claims to have new-age tanning beds that don't give off UV radiation.... does anyone know if that is even possible??

Yes, this is what I was talking about in the thread above yours. They do not burn you at all and your tan lasts longer. However, I still think they have just as great of risk of causing skin cancer.

damn dude..
i've been tanning indoors and outdoors consistently for the last 10 years!!!

Thanks for the reply. :) Karma 4 you.

just curious, do you have a family history of cancer by any chance?
I work for a dermatologist and I see things like this every day. Most just have carcinomas but there are the unlucky ones that get melanoma. Seems to be a higher rate of melanomas this year than previous years.

I have 3 lesions and they are all about the same size,,, about 1/2 an inch in diameter. I go in for surgery on the 22nd. The doc said they would take about a 3 inch peice of skin off and that I would have some nice scars. As for a family history of cancer. I know of no skin cancers and my great grandmother had breast cancer, other than that nada. I have a very healthy family. It was a shock for me for sure. Thank god I caught it early.

Thanks for all the support guys
