Walnut consumption lowers total cholesterol levels as well as LDL or 'bad' cholesterol. This may be due to the walnuts rich source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which can also improve vascular function, aiding the prevention of heart disease and stroke.

A new study has cited the special combination of nutrients in walnuts as accounting for these special benefits. In addition to providing a significant concentration of ALA, walnuts contain many vitamins, minerals, protein, fibre, melatonin, L-arginine and several other important nutrients.
