at the local Palace theatre out in the 'burbs...first weekend the movie was here in nawlinz.

opening weekend was truly a packed house, with a diverse cross section of movie attendees....guys, gals, young, middle aged, retired, married peeps. there didn't appear to be any one lifestyle group predomindating the crowd. there also was literally not a vacant rocking chair seat in the theatre.

as one local reviewer phrased it..."the movie is about 30 seconds of men having sex and 2 hours of reasons not to have sex". there was one, short, fully clothed, graphic (for the movies, anyway) sex scene, some brief nude shots later on....but no extreme close ups on engorged personal parts or anything like that. if you are worried about getting grossed out by 2 guys goin' at each other, don't be.

it's truly a sad movie...a lot of repressed emotion and heartache goin' on here. after watching this movie i'm glad it's 2006 and not 40 years ago....also glad that i live in new orleans and not montana.

if this movie doesn't get the statue for cinematogrophy.....all other movies this year pale in contrast. some beautifull scenes of the natural landscape are shown here.

the two lead actors transformed themselves for their movie roles. in the past i had viewed both of these guys as just some 20-something pretty boys; but in this movie they have gotten past their pretty face looks and displayed some excellent acting skills.

repressed, buried emotion is always the hardest to show on the screen. over the top heartache is easy to do for any second rate ham actor. the type of sublte, repressed very true to life acting and emotion the 2 lead actors put forth in this movie is extremely hard to do.

i was thinking about this movie and the characters and the plot line for hours after the movie ended and still this morning.

i may pay money to go see THIS movie again.

Is it that good? I need a good movie to see this weekend.

Unfortunately, in many parts of the country it is still 40 years ago. Like you, I'm very happy about where I'm from and live.

yes, it was/is.

i went with 3 other peeps. it was not my first (or second) choice of movies to see.

i'm glad i was out voted.

I saw it. I cried. c

It was an amazing movie... but I also viewed it from the point of having a gay brother and having to deal with how people have treated me and him because of it.

I hope Heath Ledger gets an Academy Award for that movie. Awesome actor. He looks so much like my brother.

Eh, unfortunately my state is one of those 40 years behind. Larry Miller, owner of the Jazz, a shit ton of car dealerships, and of all of the really good theatres in this town, pulled the movie from his theatres. He's suuuuuper Mormon, tried to get rid of the wine list in a restaurant he bought (that had a wine list featured in Wine Spectator), and just showed how his religion is to the whole world. Love it. I can't wait to see the movie, though. I've hears nothing but good things about it.

Are you in Utah??

I'm amazed when I hear stuff like this or go to parts of the country where stuff like this occurs.

I have always been able to read whatever I want, see every kind of art, etc. Wow is all I can say.

Yep. Utah. It's the most amazing place, geographically. I moved here from Philly, and it just blew me away. You can golf and ski on the same day, hike, wakeboard, mountain bike, there's never an excuse not to have something to do here. The church is obviously big here, but it will bug you as much as you let it... same as anything else. But once or twice a year, there will be something like this, or the church will buy a city block to make it a "public" park, but not allow music, animals, inappropriately dressed people, food, anything but what they want, and say that it is theirs to make the rules. The kind of thing that anywhere else in the country, would be huge. Here, not so much.

Utah. No gays, but polygamy is allowed, eh?

Right on.

As for the movie, I thought it was one of the saddest movies that I've seen in along time.

If it's true to life, how can it be hard to do? Everyone's different; it might have been easy for them than it would've been for others.

The only thing I don't like about gay people is the exponentially increased AIDS factor. Mix that with irresponsibility and you have social turmoil and public health tragedies waiting to happen.
