Not all Americans are ignorant. The problem is that since America toots-itself as such a forward, developed nations, everyone assumes that ALL Americans have access to good education and cultural development. However, this is definately not true as the video above clearly illustrates.

I've come to understand over the years, that although Americans in General seem to be pretty insular, they are not alone in that. There was an artical in a Canadian magazine, it started out bitching about "dumb Americans", so it hit the streets here in Canada, to prove how smart Canadians are. Some of our students are just as ignorant about Canadian history & politics, as Americans are. Because of TV, our students know more about America than Canada. Pretty sad. I blame the education system, & parents.

Unfortunately here in Brazil, the level of education is extremely low for the majority of the population. Thus, people fail to grasp any notion regarding current events, local and foreign history etc. Therefore, ignorance runs amok and politicians take advantage of the powerless, ignorant mass in order to literally dominate Brazil. I am extremely concerned with the future my country will have, especially since increasing levels of education is not part of the agenda (since that would result in government's position being challenged). They have now come up with guaranteed seats in college for people from public schools. This means that they are not trying to improve the level of primary education, simply destroying the level of higher education by introducing unprepared, lacking students to a class. This makes the net "quality" of the classes in college and University drop, in order to accomodate for the unprepared.
This is a stupid example of trying to fix a problem at the consequence (i.e. people from public schools not making it to highly-competitve public colleges) instead of at the cause (poor level of elementary education).
That is why we, who are fortunate enough to have a good level of education, must feel compelled to try and improve, even if it means our local community.
