A Veterans' Day Poem
By Holly Rulli

Veterans' Day will come and go
Quicker than the blink of an eye
But memories of heroes present and past
Will never, ever die.

The youth of today, do you understand?
The price brave men did pay
To preserve the freedom we enjoy
Each and every day.

They were called to duty, and so they went
Not knowing what was to be
Many came home, some never did
They sacrificed so we could be free.

How lonely some must have felt
How scared some had to be
They paid the bill with their own blood
What a great cost to be free.

The heroes of our country
Are the ones who paved the way
For freedom and the many rights
That we enjoy today.

Next time, young folks, you pass someone
Who may be old and gray
Remember — thanks to him or her
You have your freedom today.

They may dress funny, not see as well
Walk a little slow
But they were young when duty called
And off to war did go

Brave men today are still at war
How scared some must be
How lonely some must feel inside
Paying the price to be free

You may dress funny, not hear as well
You drive your cars too fast
But remembers all those great brave men
Of present and of past.

So when you’re called to duty
Not knowing what is to come
Remember all those men before you
Who fought for our freedom.

Support our President, support our troops
Support our country, too
As they go fighting for what is right
For freedom the price is due.

On remembrance day (and many times throughout the year) I stop & think:
Of the dying on battlefields & training accidents, realizing their future is going on without them.
Of the kids when they hear their Dad or Mom isn't coming back from"over there".
Of the parents anguish, when they realize the pain & despair their baby went through.
Of the wives & husbands laying in bed at night, with the children in the next room, wondering how they're gonna get through tomorrow, let alone the next 20 yrs.
Of the survivors, whose lives have been forever changed, & their families, who didn't get back the same person that left.
Where we would be if it weren't for these, mostly unsung, heroes.
And I weep. Every time. Like I am now.

Yeah..it makes getting shot at wortwhile...

I give two shits what people think....and not everybody who "served" is a hero.

My dad's a WWII vet. I called him, but I got the answering machine.

Veterans thankyou for being fodder for the Capatilist Pig Elite

you gave your life when they wont even give you benfits Proper Armor on your vehicles , proper pay or proper medical care, oh and not to mention PROOF of the reason for War

Listen, don't come off with that bullshit. The way I see it, and I can say this because I was in the USAF, if you sign up to serve your country, you should know what your getting yourself into. And if you don't well than shame on you. When you enlist and raise your right hand and pledge the oath, you are saying, "My life belongs to my country and whatever she asks of me, I will do without question because I am willing to give my life to protect her." When you enlist, you don't have to like your Commander in Chief, you don't even have to respect him, but you do have to follow his lead. As a soldier, no one owes you any proof, no one owes you any reason for war, you have surrendered yourself to do what you are told. If you enlist for the pay you're enlisting for the wrong reason. The military offers as good of medical care as any regular civilian care and in some cases, better.
If you don't like the way that sounds, DON'T ENLIST!!

no I dont like the way it sounds

Once again, I direct you back to my statement:

...if you sign up to serve your country, you should know what your getting yourself into. And if you don't well than shame on you. When you enlist and raise your right hand and pledge the oath, you are saying, "My life belongs to my country and whatever she asks of me, I will do without question because I am willing to give my life to protect her."

with all do respect I still believe one should "consciously object" if they feel they are fighting a wrong war

Cpl USMC 1990 - 1996 (6) Visited 6 countries in that time and have cobat action. Would do it all again. War is hell that is a fact but no matter what there will always be a need for it. And to all my Jarhead crazy fucking friends on elite OHHHHHH RAAAAA!!!!

Object 'till the fukking cows come home but when you sign on the dotted line your ass belongs to Uncle Sam. No one can use the excuse of "I didn't know what I was getting myself into.". This kind of shit has been going on since long ago and it should be no surprise to anyone if we go to war, on a pack of lies or for a legit reason. Besides, who decides whether a war is legit or not? Someone will ALWAYS say there was no reason for it. When you sign up, you sign up for the whole package. There's no pick and choose.

PROOF and Legal Grounds justify War as written in variuos Laws and International Agreements we signed unto

Pre-Emptive war as seen in this present affair violates the above
lets agree to disagree if this reply does not satisfy you

Veterans thankyou for defending us when Proof was never shown

Proof was never required...you're a soldier and you obey lawful orders...end of discussion. We all swear to obey our commander in chief and his lawful orders...don't even question whether his orders were lawful on a "grand scale" as our duly elected congressional officials already decided that issue; We carry out orders...we don't make policy.

oh get over your self righteous act

my right(s) are inalienable inherant to humanity and by God

not provided for by you
or some state

and by the way if your so fing concerned with Democaratic Values and others lives

then think before you fing speak and look at the facts and baseless accusations that led us to war this time around

but hey you dont need "proof" and would gladly DESTROY the right for your fellow man on this globe to voice his or her on opinion or even live

and I bet right about now you and your cronies woudl just love to put me in my place for speaking fact

hypocrit

what fact have u spoken? and what right am i destroying? so everyone has inalienable inherent rights? and no one needs to fight for any rights?

Take your political bullshit off a thread honoring veterans. That in and of itself is disrespectful. If you don't agree with the war, so be it. Just keep it in a thread where it is warranted.

fight for rights in defense, when some one attacks you. NOT in Offense Pre-Emptively, especially when proof was (still is) lacking.

I understand that a soldier cannot entertain the choice of exmanining why he or she does what he does. So I guess I cannot really blame "Vets"

all I am saying is that your really have to look at this present war and think to your self "WHY" maybe not when given orders but certainly after and especially when you become a civilian.

My attack and tone with you began when you suggested I must thank you for my right to a freedom of speach, and then my following tone was a typical response that I give Marines at say a Bar. When I object to the War and they give me a look like then want to kick my ass since I disagree with them but they cant do anythign do to my sheer size. The fact that thet ego egists pissing me off.

disrespect is when I am told to thank someone for my right of speach you muther f-er

and if you look at the begining statement made by me of:

"Veterans thankyou for defending us when Proof was never shown"

that was me saying thanks cus you went to fight a fucked up war anyway.
the rest of the discussion eminated from there

Until you get your ass in the grass, don't ever tell me to shut the fuck up. You don't even have to carry a rifle, carry a medic bag.

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen do not make policy, we carry it out. We couldn't care less about your feelings on the war.

no I carry the burden of being a citizen in a State that just murdered thousands of people

then when We try to assert out "Democratic Rights" I have to worry about being labeled as "Unpatriotic" then have to worry about the Feds or C IA spying on my fellow citezens, then I have to worry about the Patriot act and how our freedoms have been washed away

so untill you get you ass in the grass of asserting an opinon and protecting Democracy ( you know the kind that questions things) take your superiotiy mumbo jumbo and shove it

not to reason why, but to do or die. even though there were times that i had personal reservations about my orders, i had a responsibility to carry them out regardless. its called discipline, not stupidity.

I made my smartass statement in response to the one you made. I could careless what anyone thinks...its their RIGHT in the US and it is that because aloooong time ago we FOUGHT for that right and many others they werent just inherent.
