US citizens and conscription...

I've noticed that alot off you guys here have done military service, and some are still serving. However all seem to consider it as a short service when they serve (sorry can't word it any better than that).
Do you guys in the USA feel duty bound to 'serve your time' although you don't have conscription ?.
If thats the case I think it's conmendable as we don't have that same sense of duty here in Europe, although alot of EU countries HAVE conscription. We in Ireland however do not, and I've never come accross someone here who feels it a duty to serve their country. Here you either want to soldier or not, most who come in stay for their pension.
There's my question tonight ?.

I joined at a confusing time in my life my senior year. I had colleges all on my jock, and I was kinda scared to be at a big 4 year university by myself. I wasn't ready for college. Well, over 3 years later, I know if I get out (I have 10 months left), that I'll be more than ready for college and will be playing football again.

From what I can see more and more countries have abolished the conscription. I'm thinking about Spain especially. Its useless and you can't compare that to a professionnal army.

I am joining cause I have spent 3 years in college and I am more confused about what to do with my life then I did before college. College grades weren't great and I figure this would be better then being a bum

Isn't it fun to be on the "react" force and not be able to sleep just in case something happens. Got to love it!!! So I'll be one here for a little while longer till I'm off of it....

Btw I joined because my father, grandfather, great grandfather etc were all soldier's. My family have fought for and against the british during the first and second world wars.
I had family fight in the 1916 easter rising against the british, and our civil war.
As far back on my mother's side we've fought in the boar war in south africa and we've had family emergrate to the USA before the civil war there so no doubt we did our bit there also, although I'm not sure on which side.
So I have to say I joined along traditional and historical lines.

I joined the army cause it was once my dream, but I also left that shit for some obvious reasons. I mean obvious cause any good Canadian would know why......
