see that Navy video of the Iranians approaching and suggesting they are going to explod e the ship.

Why would the US even warn any further and not just destroy them, they were definitely probing for distance for future attacks.
 
those little bitch ass speed boats should have been turned into floating trash. You know someone in the Navy is getting their ass chewed out right now.

that was my thinking too, they were totally probing on orders - esp. since the Cole attack, I would of thought it would of showed serious resolve.

Fucking McHales Navy performance if you ask me.

From what Ive read, the higher ups WANTED them to shoot. Is was Sailor Joe's decision to delay.

If they had fired, you can bet your bottom bitch that 50% of this country would be up in arms about impeaching Bush and blaming the entire incident on the republican party.

It depends on how close it got to the ship.

Then again, Israel killed a bunch of US sailors in the 1970's and we never fired back. And the government covered it up too.

Yep. Politics. Kinda like how our govt allowed Saudi Arabia to kill 3,000 americans - and get a slap on the wrist for it.

Isreal buys our weapons and are our 'ally'. Service Members are expendable rather than risk that relationship.

If Kuwait 'accidentally' launched a missile and killed 500 soldiers on a base. Our reaction would be nothing. Politics baby. As a private you're not supposed to understand that stuff. Or even try.

Where the fuck are we going to find the troops to support WW3 if the US Navy didn't show restraint? Current tempo of deployments is barely sustainable as it is.

i thought last year we wanted to fight north korea? before that, somalia - but they kicked our asses.

I'm thinking the American sailor weren't exactly scared of the little mosquito boats. They were about to get the smack down when they buzzed off.
 
These are the Revolutionary Guards, not the regular Iranian Navy. Reports say their Navy guys are professional and polite, not loose cannons like the speedboat guys. Those little bastards were also practicing dropping "cardboard boxes" in front of one of the ships in line, some kind of mock mine-laying exercise.

NY Times said our guys were just about to open up on them with an M240 when the closest speedboat turned and ran. (7.62 AP, belt-fed. Damn, I'd prefer something with a little more oomph.)

I also wouldn't put it past them to have some guy on the radio making nasty threats without telling the guys on the speedboats.
 
any of us who lived thru the American hostage crisis still feel disgraced (except Mr. Db); I am sure there are those that will never forget and payback is in the future.

I think that if the boats came into the "free fire" zone, they could have been sunk in a matter of seconds. I understood them to be over 600 yards away, I could be wrong, I was listening while dressing this morning. I'm guessing that they could have had RPG's and small arms, not a real threat to the ships. Like I said, my guess is that if they proceeded to the 100 yard mark, the news would be different this morning.

they made verbal active threats ("your ship will explode in a few minutes") as well as were dropping what appeared to be mines

this was pure incompetence on behalf of the US Navy; plain and simple. If someone's son/daughter died by waiting even a second it would be criminal.
 
Mouse, can guys actually pick up and throw mines overboard? and if they were throwing multiple mines overboard, what would be the approximate weight that the boat would be carrying? IDK, I'm asking. It just seems to me to be a dead giveaway if the "boxs" float on too of the water bobbing like a fishing cork and they have a bunch of them. The damn boats were just what looked to be 21' fishing boats....
I just think that that saw something from the bridge that tipped them off....
 
Oh I agree that they immediately knew they were fakes, however it could of been a decoy. 1 second could of caused the death of many Navy personnel (ala Cole). Why have machine guns if you not going to use them IMO.

Would be nice to teach them not to fuck with us in a way, however in another eye I can see why we are just handing out threats. I mean we have already lost many too many people due to iraq and afgan I don't really think we should start in with iran until we can withdraw away from other places first
