***urgent*** System Crashed Need Computer Help

AAP

Plat Hero

I am using my work laptop now....my home system crashed. I get the blue screen of death during start up. It says:

STOP c0000218 Registry File Failure
Registry can not load the hive (file):
\systemroot\system32\config\software

PLEASE HELP!!!

I have tried booting it in the last known good menu and nothing. Still the same screen.

I have tried booting it in the Safe Mode menu, still same blue screen of death.

I called the XP tech help and was on the phone 70 minutes before they answered... fucking bitch couldn't speak 2 words of English back to back. Said their help desk was located in INDIA. Fucking jibber jabber bitch.

Ok, I do NOT want to reformat.... All my shit is on here... I mean my porn collection alone is worth millions. Ok seriously guys... if I could make a back up of all the work I have, I would reformat... but I can't get it to boot up.

PLEASE HELP!!

I've never seen that error and don't know how you could fix it, but I have two suggestions on how you may be able to retrieve your drive contents.

1) remove drive from your computer (or have someone who knows how to do it do it) and stick it in another desktop machine (maybe at a friend's house or at work). Copy contents to CD or to a folder on the other person's drive. You'll be able to copy it back on your HD when you've reformatted it or gotten a new one or whatever.

2) Try a boot disk. If you have two hard drives, you can copy the contents from the faulty one to the good one.

Someone may have some insight on what that BSOD message means and may be able to fix it. My hypothesis would be some kind of virus since XP is a very stable OS and shouldn't crash spontaneously.

Did you delete a config file or download a virus? XP has restore! Do you have a restore disk? Config file bad news! If you can't fix it take it to a Computer tech!

corrupted registry is BAD news.

XP does have this dohickey where it takes snapshots of your registry and can roll back to a previous version. Try checking your manual on that.

Hit F8 while it's booting, and try last known good config too, or directory services mode and see if you can go in and then restore the registry....

Boot up in safe mode and do a system restore. A lot of the time that works not matter how weird the blue screen of death error message may be. It's saved me more than once.

Ok, I do NOT want to reformat.... All my shit is on here... I mean my porn collection alone is worth millions. Ok seriously guys... if I could make a back up of all the work I have, I would reformat... but I can't get it to boot up.

I thought you had back-up gay porn magazines?

wizkid!!! that is the exact message I got...

WHAT DO I DO TO FIX IT??????

Ok, I tried safe mode and it doesn't work. I tried last known good menu and it doesn't work.

I have the XP edition disk here... what do I need to do.

EVERYONE LOOK AT THE LINK WIZKID POSTED..... AND TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!!

How do I do a rollback when I can't boot it up?

FN Show - I can not access the safe mode, all it brings me is the blue screen again.

What next?

try this

how far does it get in the startup? try holding down the Insert key and see if you can atleast access the BIOS...do NOT change anything...

same error, but probably doesn't apply to you.

that one looks like they hosed the registry during an NT upgrade. only thing they say that may help is to make sure the HD is plugged all the way in.

did you try the directory services mode too?

Alright AAP.... get into DOS Prompt and type in CHKDSK /R then hit enter. It SHOULD repair the damge in the registry.

If this doesn't work... i'll give an alternative solution, but it takes time.

That link that Wizkid gave you basically said that Microsoft had no idea what to do about the error message. It wasn't even an XP-related response that they gave.

AAP I'm not sure what I'd do. XP forces you to reformat the partition you're installing the operating system on before it installs doesn't it? I don't know how to restore a registry if you can't get into Windows even in safe mode.

Honestly I'd go find a Windows forum somewhere and post the error message. You're probably going to get some better responses there than you would here.

I have XP.

It goes past the Dell startup logo and then black... then the blue screen of death.

I am not sure about the directory services mode..... what is that?

What am I looking for in the BIOS mode once I hold down insert?

I gave you the wrong link the firs time.

Here's the right one, but first try what i said in my above post: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545 <--- very complicated and risky.

If that doesn't work... then just reinstall your OS. XP is nice like that. You can reinstall it, and not lose any files on our HD, but you will have to reinstall all your programs. Just don't reformat when it asks, just install it on the partition already made.

I get about 10 options when hitting F8, its pretty far down on the list, but it boots to a mode that you can do a restore from.

Hopefully, you'll just have to restore the registry, and possibly re-install a couple of programs to get their settings back.

Ok, I go to the Recovery Console.... it asks which windows installation would you like to log onto... the only one there is

1: C:\WINDOWS

Do I type 1 and hit enter.... if I do... it asks for the administrator password. I never assigned an admin password so it should be blank... then what?

Type in the CHKDSK/R command?

Can you get into the BIOS and set it to boot from the CD rom before harddrive? If so, unless you have a serious disc error you should be able to repair or reinstall windows.

AAP, the first thing you should do before anything is get into DOS prompt and type in CHKDSK /R

Also when it tells you to enter an admin pw, just leave a space, or 123, or abc. It was worked before. :)

I don't know how to get into the BIOS is that where I turn it on and hit the INSERT button?

Ok... now what is this about reinstalling XP and NOT losing my files?

I have all my Dreamweaver files for my website on here. And I have all my digitial photographs from my house disaster on here.

Will I lose those doing a re-install?

WIZkid = that second link states if I do all the copying and such... I will lose any changes and settings that took place after Setup completes are lost.

Ok.... I am trying to enter the DOS... I think. It says type in admin password. I am going to try 123
not valid
trying abc

not valid

trying to leave it blank and just hit enter

it is waiting

ok... it now brings up c:\WINDOWS>

what now? type in CHKDSK /R?

there is a space between the K / right?

Ok... it now says CHKDSK is performing additional checking or recovery....

46% complete

AAP said:

there is a space between the K / right?

Yes there is a space.

But to get into DOS on startup you hit F8... not sure if its the same for Dell. They might have it set as Delete

It is stuck at 46% complete....

And are you SURE all my files are ok? I mean, I stole dreamweaver and photoshop off kazaa.

Man, I tell ya'll what.... those fucked up people over in India giving out advice ain't got shit on ya'll here. Sitting over there wearing beads, smelling like curry, and with that little fuck me dot on their foreheads....

big mega slam

wizkid for mod.... we need to get rid of some of these useless boards and make a computer based board.... we don't need this gambling, music and nightclub boards....

AAP, try it one more time... if it fails, then just reinstall XP. It's very simple, just put in the cd and boot from the CD. Just follow the steps and DO NOT reformat. ONLY reinstall it and you'll be fine. You'll just have to reinstall all your progs.

sounds like you may have a corrupted sector on your hard drive, not just a bad file, "old" hard drives used to get them all the time, not nearly as common now...

If he had a corrupted sector, that means he has lost clusters. I've had that before, and there is almost no way in saving the files in that case.

This is totally different. I've have gotten the same error as AAP before and it wasn't a big deal.

you will bitch and moan irregardless, read no homosexual affection into this...:)

i always k blast people that are helpful...or amusing...even the nature boy...

useless boards do need to go if only to speed this bitch up...

plus, i will pester the fuck outta wizkid now if i need help...:)

ok up to 71% complete.....

72 now

so if I do have to reinstall my XP... I just boot from the CD and choose to NOT reformat? When that dot bitch from India wanted me to do that... I did not see the option to just re install... maybe I missed it somewhere.

But I would have to grab dreamweaver off the kazaa again and reinstall it.. BUT all my webpages and photos would still be there from the previous time?

73% complete....

Ok when this reaches 100% complete..... 74 now.... what do I do? Does it reboot automatically or do I type exit or what?

WHAT THE FUCK???? IT MADE A STRANGE ""WHYMP" NOISE AND NOW IT SAYS 50% COMPLETE.....????? IT WENT FROM 75% TO 50%...

what exactly is it doing now anyway, the chkdsk thing?

You're most likely going to have to end up reinstalling xp anyway..

Its easy, you just boot the pc up with xp in drive and click the appropriate answers,.

It won't erase anything, it'll just reset all the windows settings back to default.

It is at 63% complete.... I dont know why it jumped backwards from 74 to 50 again... it made a horrible noise and just started back over at 50.

Ok.... NOW what? Reinstall or do the steps that is listed on that link wizkid posted up ?

What to do?
What to do?

/r means recover (or repair).

If found something bad and moved what it could somewhere else and is going through it again.

do what wiz said but i'll put money on it that you're just going to have to reinstall.

That noise may mean you have a bad drive. I know if you have a bad drive with a ton of bad sectors on it, and you try and reformat it, it won't let you. You're stuck and off to Best Buy you go.

and since it has made some progress this time, if it does lock up again; just keep starting over until it can get through it

ok the chkdsk ran all night with nothing good happening...

I am putting in the cd to boot and reinstall but I just keep getting the blue screen... how do I get to the options menu to reinstall?

HELP!!! WHEN DO I GET TO THE SCREEN THAT ASKS ME TO REFORMAT AND I SAY NO???? I AM REINSTALLING NOW, BUT IT HAS NOT ASKED ME THAT YET. RIGHT NOW IT SAYS SETUP COPYING FILES TO THE WINDOWS INSTALLATION FOLDERS.

WHEN SHOULD I BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THE NO COMMAND TO REFORMAT??

It will ask you after you have the initial setup files copied over. Its an option button.

WODIN said:
It will ask you after you have the initial setup files copied over. Its an option button.

And then I will say HELL NO and all my previous pics and files will be there. Like magic?

I swear to God if I get this fixed with no losses here, then I will refrain from making gay posts... for like, a day.

Ok, it went through the installation thingy... then it came up and asked me the usual stuff about internet connection and shit..

BUT I DID NOT SEE A REFORMAT OPTION!!!! FUCK!!!!!!!

IT JUST CAME UP AND I DON'T HAVE SHIT HERE.... THERE WAS NO REFORMAT OPTION!!!!!

THIS SHIT IS CLEAN AGAIN!!

OH FUCK OH FUC OH FUCJ OH FUCK OHFUCK OH FUCK

WHAT TO DO NOW??????

So the installation process rolled through?

Sorry man I don't know if you're gona be able to recover everything. Everytime I've reinstalled XP, it says would you like setup to intall windows on c:. I say yes. It then says there is currently an installation of windows on c:\windows, installing another copy could result in loss of data or something like that. It asks are you sure. If you say no it prompts you to select another partition to install it on, if you say yes, it install it on c:\windows and some of your files will be there. It seems to keep everything in the my documents folder but most of my installed programs are gone. Good luck. If I remember, you got XP home instead of Pro right? I doubt you wuold have ahd this happen with pro. The only probs I've seen with Pro is mainly from hardware issues not the OS itself. You wuold literally have to corrupt your registry yourself to hose this OS. I've had XP pro on here ever since RC1 and the only times I've had to reinstall it, were my own fault messing with partition magic or trying to dual boot and forgetting that win2k steals the boot partition from XP. Anyways I'm rambling. You should seriously look into downloading Drive Image 2002. It's a program that will make an image of your partition. You then have it create a hidden partition and install the image there. If something like this happens, you just install XP and drive image then restore the image you created and it puts you back where you were. It's an awesome program

deliquinet.... that is EXACTLY the process it gave me and I went through. Now there is NOTHING on my machine. Not even in My Documents. NOTHING.

FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!

Seriously. Either download something like drive image or start backing up your data routinely. The thing I've learned with XP is that the system restore feature is a good tool and all but when the registry if messed with, you are fucked. I've never been able to get that recovery console to work so I gave up on that. Another thing you can do is get partition magic and create a separate partition for you porn and setup files for any programs you download. I've done that before and it's helped me out a couple times.

No offense but some of the stuff you were told is pretty damn ghey...i mean hold insert to enter BIOS? WTF is that gonna do for a registry error? anyways this one is pretty easy Ive seen it before:

How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry that Prevents Windows XP from Starting
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q307545
SUMMARY
This article describes how to recover a Windows XP system that does not start because of corruption in the registry. This procedure does not guarantee full recovery of the system to a previous state; however, you should be able to recover data when you use this procedure.

You can repair a corrupted registry in Windows XP. Corrupted registry files can cause a variety of different error messages. Please refer to the Knowledge Base for articles regarding error messages related to registry issues.

This article assumes that normal recovery methods have failed and access to the system is not available except by using Recovery Console. If an Automatic System Recovery (ASR) backup exists, it is the preferred method for recovery; it is recommended that you use the ASR backup before you try the procedure described in this article.

NOTE: Make sure to replace all 5 of the registry hives. If you only replace a single hive or two, this can cause potential issues, since software and hardware may have settings in multiple locations in the registry.
MORE INFORMATION
When you try to start or restart your Windows XP-based computer, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE

Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate
The procedure described in this article uses Recovery Console, System Restore, and lists all the required steps in specific order to ensure that the process completes fully. After you complete this procedure, the system should return to a state very close to the system before the problem occurred. If you have ever run NTBackup and completed a system state backup, you do not have to follow the procedures in parts two and three; you can skip to part four.
Part One
In part one, you boot to the Recovery Console, create a temporary folder, back up the existing registry files to a new location, delete the registry files at their existing location, and then copy the registry files from the repair folder to the System32\Config folder. When you are finished with this procedure, a registry is created that you can use to boot back into Windows XP. This registry was created and saved during the initial setup of Windows XP, so any changes and settings that took place after Setup completes are lost.

To complete part one, follow these steps:
Boot to the Recovery Console.
At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line:
md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

Type exit to quit Recovery Console. Your computer will restart.
NOTE: This procedure assumes that Windows XP is installed to the C:\Windows folder. Make sure to change C:\Windows to the appropriate windows_folder if it is a different location.

If you have access to another computer, to save time, you can copy the text in step two, and then create a text file called "Regcopy1.txt" (for example). To create this file, run the following command when you boot into Recovery Console:
batch regcopy1.txt

The Batch command in Recovery Console allows for all the commands in a text file to be sequentially processed. When you use the batch command, you do not have to manually type as many commands.
Part Two
To complete the procedure described in this section, you must be logged on as an administrator, or an administrative user (a user who has an account in the Administrators group). If you are using Windows XP Home Edition, you can log on as an administrative user. If you log on as an administrator, you must first start Windows XP Home Edition in Safe mode. To start the Windows XP Home Edition computer in Safe mode, follow these steps.

NOTE: Print these instructions before you continue. You cannot view these instructions after you restart the computer in Safe Mode. If you use the NTFS file system, also print the instructions from Knowledge Base article Q309531, which is referenced in Step 7.
Click Start, click Shut Down (or click Turn Off Computer), click Restart, and then click OK (or click Restart).
Press the F8 key.

On a computer that is configured to start to multiple operating systems, you can press F8 when you see the Startup menu.
Use the arrow keys to select the appropriate Safe mode option, and then press ENTER.
If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, use the arrow keys to select the installation that you want to access, and then press ENTER.
In part two, you copy the registry files from their backed up location by using System Restore. This folder is not available in Recovery Console and is normally not visible during normal usage. Before you start this procedure, you must change several settings to make the folder visible:
Start Windows Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Folder options.
Click the View tab.
Under Hidden files and folders, click to select Show hidden files and folders, and then click to clear the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box.
Click Yes when the dialog box is displayed that confirms that you want to display these files.
Double-click the drive where you installed Windows XP to get a list of the folders. If is important to click the correct drive.
Open the System Volume Information folder. This folder appears dimmed folder because it is set as a super-hidden folder.

NOTE: This folder contains one or more _restore {GUID} folders such as "_restore{87BD3667-3246-476B-923F-F86E30B3E7F8}".

NOTE: You may receive the following error message:

C:\System Volume Information is not accessible. Access is denied.
If you get this message, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article to gain access to this folder and continue with the procedure:
309531 How to Gain Access to the System Volume Information Folder

Open a folder that was not created at the current time. You may have to click Details on the View menu to see when these folders were created. There may be one or more folders starting with "RPx under this folder. These are restore points.
Open one of these folders to locate a Snapshot subfolder folder; the following path is an example of a folder path to the Snapshot folder:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{D86480E3-73EF-47BC-A0EB-A81BE6EE3ED8}\RP1\Snapshot

From the Snapshot folder, copy the following files to the C:\Windows\Tmp folder:
_REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM
These files are the backed up registry files from System Restore. Because you used the registry file created by Setup, this registry does not know that these restore points exist and are available. A new folder is created with a new GUID under System Volume Information and a restore point is created that includes a copy of the registry files that were copied during part one. This is why it is important not to use the most current folder, especially if the time stamp on the folder is the same as the current time.

The current system configuration is not aware of the previous restore points. You need a previous copy of the registry from a previous restore point to make the previous restore points available again.

The registry files that were copied to the Tmp folder in the C:\Windows folder are moved to ensure the files are available under Recovery Console. You need to use these files to replace the registry files currently in the C:\Windows\System32\Config folder. Recovery Console has limited folder access and cannot copy files from the System Volume folder by default.

NOTE: The procedure described in this section assumes that you are running your computer with the FAT32 file system.
Part Three
In part three, you delete the existing registry files, and then copy the System Restore Registry files to the C:\Windows\System32\Config folder:
Boot to Recovery Console.
At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line:
del c:\windows\system32\config\sam

del c:\windows\system32\config\security

del c:\windows\system32\config\software

del c:\windows\system32\config\default

del c:\windows\system32\config\system

copy c:\windows\tmp\_registry_machine_software c:\windows\system32\config\software

copy c:\windows\tmp\_registry_machine_system c:\windows\system32\config\system

copy c:\windows\tmp\_registry_machine_sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam

copy c:\windows\tmp\_registry_machine_security c:\windows\system32\config\security

copy c:\windows\tmp\_registry_user_.default c:\windows\system32\config\default

NOTE: Some of the preceding command lines may be wrapped for readability.

Part Four
Click Start, and then click All Programs.
Click Accessories, and then click System Tools.
Click System Restore, and then click Restore to a previous Restore Point.

Shit man I just read your last post, guess I was a little late, one thing you can try that Ive seen before, is if you KNOW you didnt format, with XP your shit may be on there, it makes you use a different user after you re-install so your program shortcuts and my documents folder would be like you just installed windows...

If you havent already manually go out to C:\program files\ and see if you have your dreamweaver etc programs...if you know you didnt format they should still be there...and if they are, in C:\Documents and Settings\(your OLD user name)\My Documents would have your stuff from the my documents folder...but you need your current login to have administrative rights to be able to open up a different login's documents folder(more than likely this is already set up as an administrator account)

come on guys... tell me how to access this other user account. I go under the control panel to user accounts (or whatever it is called) and it has two users there. the one I created this morning and the Guest account. The other user (my old name) is not listed.

Also, when I hit start and change user... it doesn't list it there either.

Notice how he hauled ass off the chat board the other week when I threatened him with a call out thread?

Apparently the little sissy can't stand the thought of everyone seeing him being less a man than someone he calls queeny. Especially after 5 cycles or so like he says.... He may want to get some test to cycle with that premarin and depo provera.

My only geuss would be to look under the add new user account help and read through it to see if there is an option for importing an existing user account.

Press F1.

You're an idiot and this thread proves it, 100X over.

You were told step by step how to recover your crashed PC.

Unfortunately, you were also given some bad advice and you followed it as well.

I did a recover exactly like this recent for one my clients. I had his data backed up, his OS reinstalled and all his PC back to its' original state within 6 hours.

However, you have been such a megaprick that I have just sat back and watched you flail about in your own ignorance.

Sadly, I haven't really been amuzed as you probably think I would be, since I know what it's like to have a PC crash.

Now, you are even fabricating "cycles" and info that is nothing more than illusionary.

Keep up the good work.

Listen here you little faggot, you claimed five cycles and "Rome wasn't built in a day" when people were ragging the hell out of your pic when you posted it.

You truly are a sorry excuse for a woman. Obviously you can not read either, the salt from all the money shots to your eyes must have affected you more than you admit. Or you would have seen, I tried all the options that were presented up to the one that reformatted my hard drive.

This is where ya kinda run into a problem, the other user account is associated with the old XP install...my advice would be to back up your data and format it and start clean...installing windows over top of itself usually just leads to problems further down the road...and since you still have the data on there youd be able to back it up, and as far as programs you should be able to re-download/reinstall any programs you would need

If your set against it...probably the easiest thing you could do would be to go into the program files folder, make shortcuts for the programs and stick em in your start menu folder so you have em in there....then copy over the documents from your other user and put em in your new one...

Ok... so how do I copy all the files from the previous user account to the new one? I see the user account on the DOS prompt when exploring C drive.

I must have been really drunk gay boy, cause I don't recall the five cycles thing.

Even did a search for rome and my username. Nada.

Why don't you quit obsessing about me and go back to fumbling through hosing up your PC. At the rate you're going, it will be next year before you're back up and running on that one.

AAP,

You could navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\<old user name>\ folder using Windows Explorer and copy the entire directory to your desktop and then copy the important shit to the correct new user folders. If you are logged in as the Admin I do not think you will have any access privilege complaints from Windows.

Glad to see that your PC recovery has enabled you to return to your XBiker flaming. I find it very amusing.

If you are logged in as the Admin I do not think you will have any access privilege complaints from Windows.

Glad to see that your PC recovery has enabled you to return to your XBiker flaming. I find it very amusing.

What he said.. I'm running XP pro
All the user's should be listed here as long as your logged in account has Admin rights.

XBitch - don't you worry... I am occupied right now... but I promise you - and I mean PROMISE YOU - that when I get this brought back up... I am going to ROAST your ass. Don't worry about back tracking and trying to cover things up, it ain't gonna help. Your old scrawny ass is going to be owned nine ways to Sunday. I might not post it today, but I assure you by tomorrow at the LATEST, your loser ass is going to be owned like a cheap hooker.

I see you changed your avatar to something more original. Good. Now you can change your user name as well. Instead of Ex - Man you can more appropiately call yourself D-NVR-WUZ-MAN.

Warik and everyone else who finds this whippings I hand him amusing... you ain't seen nothing yet. NJSerious would even cringe at this one coming up.

Also, Warik I am trying the copying to desk top folder scenario and will let you know how it goes.

Tee Hee is fucking right.... for us.

For her... it is more like Boo Hoo!

Just wait until I get five minutes free.

Whenever I upgrade an OS, I end up with profile directories of Administrator, Admini~1, Admin~2, etc. I just copy the stuff over to the new profile and junk the old one...

Not sure how to copy... but right now... it is ok.

Though, I have lost my Dreamweaver and all files with it. My entire webdesign.

I have all the photos and buttons, etc.. that I used... but just have to redesign the entire site all over.

that sucks.

if you hard drive makes that wierd noise when you're using it again, back your stuff up and take it in for service; there could be a hardware problem.

on the bright side, well not really, it usually goes faster the second time, and turns out a little better....
