Upcoming Competition Worries...

Screwball

New member
Here's my situation. The double denim that I ordered from Karen is too tight for me to use as is. I now feel that it will take 540+ lbs. in order for me to touch. I am close to locking out 500 lbs. I spoke with Karen on the phone and we agreed on the alterations. The goal is to take 40-50 lbs. out of the shirt so that an opening attempt touch of 500 lbs. is attained with a chance of locking it out (if not now certainly in a month or two). My suggestions were to take 1/2" off of the arms & shoulders and 1" off of the chest. I hope to get it back before next Friday but that just may be wishful thinking.

Brian Mincher has loaned me an Inzer EHPHD Double Poly to use at the competition next Saturday, since my denim is not ready. I've only been in the shirt once and only attempted a single lift. It didn't go too well. I think with enough time I could figure the shirt out but I don't have any time left. I wanted to get another workout in the shirt this weekend but my usual training partner bailed on me (for the last time) so I didn't have the assistance I needed. Needless to say, I don't feel very confident. As far as what I can do in the shirt it's basically a shot in the dark.

Anyway, I may have to lift raw. If I do I'll probably go 405 - 425 - 445. I'm confident about the 405, and the 425 has a possibility, and the 445 would be a nice gift. I'm going to get one more workout in on Monday with the hopes of some shirt work and/or some raw opening attempts to try and figure out what I need to do. Any suggestions???

the only thing i could think off is just pray that you get your denim in time, and then doa few light singles in it to get used to it again. If you dont get the denim in time, try to use the EHPHD a few times with some light singles to learn your groove in it.

If all else fails.. i guess i could let you borrow my single ply heavy duty poly shirt.... you think you could squeeze into it (im 135 lbs, so there isnt that much of a difference in our weight lol)

I wouldnt lift raw, it would put you at a real unfair situation. Best bet, is to decide which shirt your using by the end of the week, and then get used to it.

and by the way, 405 is one hell of a bench raw too.

Screwball, I would try that poly that Brian gave you again on Monday. It didnt feel right the first time that you tried it on but it might feel good if you try it again on Monday and work up in your weight slowly so you get some heavy attempts in to
determine if the shirt is good for you or not because if you only tried the poly once for a single lift then you might want to give it another chance. New equipment or can feel weird when you try them the first time.

Damn Screwball you should have called me. I would have come down to help. I would just try out the poly and work on it this week with submax weights. I think it's too late to worry about the denim, even if it does come in you won't have any time in it before the meet. Save the denim for July and work with the poly. If you think you can open with 405 raw just try that opener with the shirt. Then go up from there. You're easily 455+ in that shirt if you can hit a groove in it.

IF you want to get together tomorrow and work with the shirt drop me a line here or email. That way at least you could get a few more reps in it. Then you could do some board presses on Wed. Let me know.

Once Karin has your shirt you will get it back in 2 to 3 days tops. You may have time. If not use the poly.

When exactly is the meet? And i wouldnt worry if its a week or more. You will have th eshirt. Let her knwo also.

Welcome to the world i live in with these shirts. Yu knwo what you can lift but if it doesnt touch....well doeant count. I feel ya bro. Use the poly if nothing comes in.

Good advice by all. This is my plan. The meet is the Hugh Dunagan Classic (APF) on Saturday the 11th (next Saturday) in Tulsa, OK. I'm going to call Karen and see how quickly I can get the denim back. On Monday I'm going to shirt the poly up and see what I can do. I think it will take around 425+ lbs. to touch in the poly so I may open raw with 405 and shirt up for second and third attempts. I'll know for sure after Monday. Thanks for all your help!

BigOkie, I appreciate the offer but I don't think it's necessary for you to make the trip. I'll have plenty of help on Monday and I'll get that shirt figured out. You're a good friend to make the offer. Thanks! Oh, I hit the timed dumbbell presses and dumbbell extensions on the stability ball for AR today. I'm feeling good about the AR workouts. See you next weekend.

Quit being a woman. No offense nightfly and spatterson. Put that poly on, open at about 425 or 430, smoke it, then add 30 lbs for your second, smoke that too, then if your denim is in, throw it on for a third attempt and go balls out!!!

Seriously, if you can get some reps in on Monday with the poly, I think you will be fine. By july, I have no doubts that you will be going over 500 with the denim. Just need to get that lockout caught up with that insane bottom end strength.

Post again after monday's workout and let us know how things are going. And take this for what it is worth, but when warming up before putting that poly on monday night, stop raw warmups at 315, then do the rest of your warmups with the shirt on. I think it is easier to find what will touch that way. Go 365, 405, 430 or something like that. You only have so many reps in you per workout, so save them for the shirt, especially considering that time is short.

Also, drop me a line ASAP and let me know when you are coming down so I can make sure to be home to let you in. I have to weigh in the night before between 7:00 and 9:00 as I am having some weight problems.

B.

Your right, Brian. I'm going to the gym tomorrow night with one goal. Get that Poly on, hit a few reps and find an opener. That's it! I'm definitely going to hit as few reps as possible. I'll stop at 315 for a single and then shirt-up for the rest as you suggest. I'll post the workout tomorrow night. Thanks for the help!
