Unemployment...

b fold the truth

I feel really bad about what is going on.

I am in school (still) and working full-time. I have worked here for a year and will be losing my job in 4 weeks. I need to take classes this Summer and next semester to finish my degree. Since I am losing my job to a foreign country, I am approved for NAFTA benefits.

I get...
unemployment for 2 years
tuition paid for 2 years
books paid for 2 years
$10 a day for gas to and from class
all expenses for all courses paid for 2 years

I just worry about a job. I am 24 now and have had a job of some sort since I was 14. They told me that IF I find another job they will take away 80% of my NAFTA benefits and of course I would lose my unemployment.

I hate being on unemployment...but what gives?

Any thoughts on this issue?

here mexico....

here mexico...

come get this nice job i've got here...

take it you fucker, TAKE IT!!!

*sigh*

B fold they just make it tooooooo easy to be unemployed these days. It sickens me when lazy people abuse public assistance programs just so they can remain lazy..

But clearly this is not the case here. You are being involuntarily separated from your employment, due to no fault of your own.

You are bettering yourself and expanding your future career opportunities. Use what's rightly yours and don't feel bad about it for one second.

I see this clearly as an opportunity given to you from above! My goodness are you being "taken care of" here!!

Embrace it and be joyful and thankful!!

VOO DOO LADY HOW DO YOU THINK PEOPLE START ABUSING PUBLIC ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS? BY BEING LAID OFF AND COLLECTING BENEFITS AND THEN JUST CONTINUING. NOT SAYING THAT'LL HAPPEN TO OUR FRIEND B FOLD HERE, BUT I WOULDN'T SAY HIS SITUATION IS STARTING OFF ALL THAT DIFFERENTLY FROM OTHER PEOPLE SOME OF WHOM ABUSE THE SYSTEM.

B FOLD GET ANOTHER JOB BRO I FIND WORKING IS GOOD FOR MY MENTAL HEALTH.

I am undergoing the same sitaution, altho i didn't get approved for nafta, i did get tra... i had a hard time with it and to be honest cannot find an equivalent paying job. I have yet to go down and collect any aditional tra benefits or use any of the extension.

You paid into the system for years let the system pay you back. corporate greed not competition is what cost you your job...

you are going to be reaping some kick ass benefits. take advantage of that!. heit, $10 a day for GAS?! jeesus. I spend like $30 a week and I drive everyday. seriously. dont feel too bad about it, nothing you could do about it. I have been in your situation, and being laid off SUCKS. hang in there. at least you will have more time for yourself in the meantime, but at least enjoy it, and try not to sulk because you dont have a job. not having a job doesnt mean, you are worthless. is your resume updated? contacts? the time you will spend off of work can be used to catch up on projects that you put off. look on the bright side, that is all you SHOULD do, mang. being laid off sucks, but worrying about being jobless while jobless sucks even more. do something about it.

OK Bro, quit being ignorant. He just said that he has worked for 10 years (as well as being a student) and is be laid off due to US Government policy. He doesn't even come close to ANYONE that abuses public assistance (theoretically or physically). Just because he is offered public assistance doesn't mean he is a degenerate that abuses public assitance. I mean honestly, that's just a rude accusation to make. Do a little research, I'm a new guy and even I know he's cool.

B Fold,

Don't know you, but thought I may offer some advise as you, in my mind, have a square head on your shoulders.

As I said in my previous post you have learned the value of having a job, and supporting yourself (to some extent I assume). That's 10 years of effort that you've put into your education, from both a scholastic and a real world perspective.

Why, don't you take the advantage of this situation and finish your degree free of the work stress?? I can understand that you may feel the need to work, but why? 6 months seems like a short time for you to take advantage of that, get your degree, and move on. Stop felling guilty, you have NO need.

After that, well......I think the job world calls.

I deliverd pizza when I was in college...I made great money and it was all under the table....something to think about...just don't eat too much:D

Take the money and run. Get a masters degree while you're at it.

Generally I am opposed to people milking the unemployment system, but in this instance I think you should take advantage of it.

They want you to pursue training that will enable you get a new better paying job and become a more productive, higher tax-paying member of society. So do it. Let them pay for your school and expenses etc.

And in the mean time you can train like a fiend. They will get their money back when they take huge chunks out of your checks for winning strongman competitions.

Bfold, I'm not familiar with NAFTA benefits, but here's what would make the call for me. Is that money that YOU contributed over time, and are now drawing on? Or is it taxpayer money? For example, in Missouri, we contribute to unemployment, then if we have to collect on it, we're merely drawing out money we earned. In Kansas, you draw on money that's alotted by the state for UE. In Missouri, I'd feel entitled to my own money. In KS, I'd have to think twice.

Hummm odd....I'm going to talk mostly outta my ass here because I don't have the time to research it right now, but I would venture to guess that unless you were making quite a significant salary, it would only take a couple of weeks to "get back" what you paid in. It's the same deal with social security...that's why we are in danger of it running out....if you only took out EXACTLY what you put in, we wouldn't have that problem....

I can't fathom why one wouldn't use the resources available to them...makes no sense to me  That’s like saying I wouldn’t take public transportation because my fare doesn’t cover the cost of the bus….

Here's a better example - if you got into a car accident would you add up the money you paid in premiums over the years and only accept THAT amount?

I was supposed to have a job till October or December...so I could finish school. The job is moving earlier than expected...much earlier.

I have paid into unemployment and so has my employer. NAFTA is something that the government offers to companies to give to their employees if they choose to move to another country. I am the ONLY person where I work who is attending school or even interested in higher education.

I work this job because I can work 40 hours and still go to school full-time. I can study while at work late at night and take all of my classes before work. Finding a job that pays near the same and allows for education flexibility will be near impossible to find.

I do understand that if I get a job...it will probably cost me about $2,500 in educational benefits that have been promised to me. I have to work for them too, resume, job applications,etc...

I draw unemployment for 6 months plus the extra 3 months recently approved by Bush. After that, NAFTA...WIA picks up for the rest of the time if I need it.

Part of me hates it and part of it looks at it like God has put me in this job for a reason. When I took this job, I was told that I would not get any benefits, now I feel blessed.

I plan to work for cash (dj business, mowing yards, etc...) when I can. I am also shooting to earn my pro card this October. Who knows.

Thanks...any other advice?

hey bfold if you need to talk to someone who is in the eact same situation you got my aim handle.

Listen to your heart B Fold....

I got this little e-mail "joke" from a co-worker and I think the idea really fits here.....do we always recognize when we are being blessed? Or do we second guess and over-analyze things into the ground, forgetting to make the most of the things we are given and be appreciative....

VDL, in Missouri it's employer matched, so it doesn't take long at all. Seems most of your damn check goes to UE and SocSec.

B True, I've been on the phone with an awesome lady at the Kentucky Department of Labor. You should feel totally justified due to the source of federal appropriations. Will PM or IM you about it...

Thanks Spatts...and Saint. My computer crashed last week and I lost all of my aim stuff, as well as email addys, etc...

My family is really excited because I will be staying here longer. Opportunities are out there for me to take, work wise, as long as I move and move away now. I had basically given up on my graduation because I want to make money...maybe I am being told something.

VDL...thanks...maybe that story really does apply to me.

I look at it this way.

You have been given a great opportunity to put everything into your schoolwork and your sport right now.

you arent some crack whore with 3 kids from 3 different fathers who will be sucking off the system and passing it on to your young to over the next 50 years.

With this opportunity and it is, you can become the best in yoru class, which will help you get even better employment or have better options when you graduate. Ie you make more money, you live better, plus you will pay 10 fold(pun intnded) in taxes incomparison to what they will pay you the next 2 years.

I say dont sweat it. you are a productive member of society and if you dont want it, I am coming down to the states and I will pretend I am you and take it for you:D

Only people who lost a job through no fault of their own can collect unemployment insurance. Of course, there must be people who scam this, but the vast majority of those on UE are honest, displaced workers due to layoffs and business closures. Besides, it's THEIR money. They've paid in so why shouldn't they use it if necessary?

Just want to say thanks to everyone...for everything on this thread...
