I heard there is something I can get so I can have 2 computers connected to cable modem with only one modem.

any help and input would be great. I'm computer clueless

you can get a router i believe at radio shack and have both puters online....:)

cable/dsl router....Linksys, netgear, d-link, etc. < $100

you need to buy a networking hub and extra cable.

do both computers have the same operating system? if it's windows XP then you can use the internet connection sharing wizard - easy as hell.

I'm not sure Radio Hack sells them. Best Buy or Compusa

The hardware solution (Linksys, whatever) can also be a firewall, which you need if you drank Bill Gates' purple KoolAid. They make a model that has a four-port switch built in, so you don't need a separate hub. The price difference vs. a single-port version is neglgible.

Staples would be 'way cheaper than Radio Shack.

Doesn't matter if one box is running Windows and the other is running a real O/S -- all that matters is they all speak "Internet."

Windows Connection Sharing means you have to have that computer running in order to use the other one on the 'Net. If you're the sort who leaves the computers on all the time that's okay, but if you or the other person is in the habit of shutting down the PC when you go to bed, that gets inconvenient real fast.

I have a netgear hub with 4 ports.. 2 computers, 1 cable modem.
they make me pay an extra $5 for an extra IP every month
I heard if I have a router then yuo don't have to pay the extra $5

We've got a desktop & 2 laptops on one router -- we have it set up as a network with cards, etc......

yes, the router will make use of NAT (network address translation) to share a single public IP address with many private ones.

Get one more DSL provider.

Nay, get two more, one for redundant back-up.
