also, when i press "clear history" nothing happens....am i supposed to see a progress bar?

When you go into history there should be a button at the bottom that says CLEAR that you push.

there isn't a progress bar. If you go back to safari and check your history. If it's clear well then it worked. Try restarting your phone it may help if it's running slow.
