Tornadoes in Los Angeles?

It was pretty crazy with the hard rain today.

I was watching the weather, it is crazy there. The rain, tornadoes, and mud slides...I would hate to be there right now!

They happen, but are very rare and usually aren't intact long enough to be absolutely verified. Usually when one does come down in the City of Los Angeles, it will be very weak and will only touch down for a block or two, maybe rip a few roofs off, and disappear. Los Angeles is too hilly for a big midwestern-style tornado to get much momentum. I've seen 1 in person near UCLA when I was about 12, and there was another one about 15 years ago that nearly wrecked the Los Angeles Convention Center before they rebuilt it, and the Staples Center. A lot of times, as with yesterday's events, they start as water spouts over the ocean, and ram inland only a few hundred yards until they get broken up by the terrain of the coastline.

We're in Ventura County, and we had some minor damage to our orange and avocado crops, which might total about $2500. The wind at the weather station about 1 mile from our place showed a gust at 160 mph on Monday morning, which tore a roof off a pasture shade structure and threw iron patio furnture in our pool and down the cliff  . Luckily most of the damage was at our house itself, and not to the trees which are down hill and a little sheltered by the hilltop where the house sits. However, no complaint for our little stuff, as a 21-year-old man was killed in bed at the north end of the county when a tree was blown through his bedroom. Today it's up for guesses as to what it's going to do. Very changeable. A fully-loaded limb of mandarin oranges is lying in front of the house, where it was blown from a few hundred feet away. So I'll pick them and deliver them to friends later today, so as not to waste.

The verified tornados were down in southern Orange County, which is about 100 miles down the coast from us.

the only part of cali worthwhile is north of redding.
seems like the rest is either desert wasteland, or overpriced cityscapes
overrun with illegals/crime/high taxes and funtime natty events (fire, rain, drought).
i wish i could move :(
