Which bands do you guys think are the most underrated?

I'd say (without much conviction)

The Velvet underground
The beach boys
Violent Femmes

Not underrated. Have you ever read reviews of Pet Sounds?

Toto is THE most underrated band ever. Thanks to every single music critic there is.
I prefer Men at Work

I agree with Boston. I also think Live doesn't get a fair shake because of the religious overtones in thier music.

That, and their music has been going downhill since 1997.

LOL

I do believe that Mental Jewelry, (their first album) was thier best work, with Throwing Copper close behind. But I also think The Distance to Here was ok. We'll see if they can pick it back up with Songs From Black Mountain.

Whoa whoa whoa, let's be fair here. 1994.

Boston has one good album, after that, shit. Amanda makes me want to kill people.

Velvet Underground? Underrated? Have you guys listened to music post 1990? Everyone rides their nuts.

And as much as it pains me to say it, Toto is underrated if only for their work on Thriller.

I totally forgot the great great ....... Great White

Eagles
Steely Dan
I'll agree with you that Steely Dan has been underrated ... I have to say that I do think the Eagles are pretty well respected.

I'm totally throwing in with Zero on Jethro Tull.

And I'm gonna mention a band that probably NOBODY has heard of but did have one hit song in the 90s, Webb Wilder ;)

I've had the pleasure of working with Webb Wilder a number of times over the past 20 years. It's always a fun show, and they're nice guys.

Jethro Tull is one of the few prog-rock bands whose music has aged well. I can live without their conceptual pieces such as "A Passion Play" or "Aqualung" (the song, not the whole album), but a lot of their early material still sounds surprisingly fresh. And Ian Anderson is a big ailurophile, he gets points for that in my book.

Ian Anderson modeled for the alien in the movie "Predator", however.

Well I learned SO MUCH from this single post ... a new word, a new reason to toddle after Mr. dB in star struck awe, and a completely COOL word for a cat lover!!! OMG!!! :qt: I'm absolutely atwitter ... I only knew that Ian Anderson owned a salmon farm ...

I adore Tull's early stuff, my ex used to laugh at me because my absolute favorite Tull album is Heavy Horses. It's adorable, it's like a walk in the woods on a warm autumn day. I dunno, I guess it's because I grew up around animals, practically on a farm ... but I really love their music, and just Ian's stuff. Hubby and I will put Roots to Branches on and just let it play on a long drive, run it for a few hours ...

collective soul i really like them and they dont get much recognition

Between them, Creed, and Candlebox, in the mid-1990s I had this theory that all bands beginning with the letter "C" suck.

Two more along this line:

Sacred Reich
Overkill

Sacred Reich! Undeniably underrated. Surf Nicaragua was classic from start to finish.

I saw Overkill live along with TEstament and Motorhead. I wasn't real impressed, and I just got Overkill's "cover" album, and to be quite honest, it sucked. Blitz's voice just didn't hold up over the years.

I'd like to toss another thrash band that didn't get enough recognition in my opinion, Nuclear Assault.

I'm going to throw a mellow tone to this one as well and say that Queensryche never got the recognition they desrved. Operation Mindcrime is one of the best heavy metal concept albums ever and their music prior to that was unique and intense, along with being melodic.

Don't let their "mellow streak" after that dissuade you. along this genre I would include Fates Warning as well.

oh yeah, one more. Candlemass. that fat fucker could downright wail like there was no tomorrow.

Iron Maiden is definitely underrated in the history of metal. Dream Theater, and Queensryche are definitely underrated. Overkill was better than most of the other thrash bands of the 80's.

Another vote goes out to The Dead Milkmen. I'm metal to the bone, but The Dead Milkmen are funny as hell.

Better watch what you say, Phil's gonna track you down through your IP address and kick your ass!
