Throbbing on back of head?!

The other day i was doing some heavy barbell curls and I must have went overboard on em, I got an intense throbbing pain on the back of my head/upper neck muscles. This was three days ago. Im thinking I broke a blood vessel back there on my neck. Hopefully it isn't inside of my skull.

It comes back when I am lifting hard and getting at it. But now it is not as bad and only lasts the first couple of sets, Im taking it pretty easy to let it heal. Im going to take 5 days off from lifting to see if it clears up.

Im taking lots of fish oil, flax oil, and niacin with plenty of water.
Anyone have any input??

Seek out a medical professional if you deem it very serious.

Been hit in the head resently? (doesn't have to have been a hard hit)

Is it upper trapezious muscle area?

have the exact same type of thing going by what you described, and mine occurs when i am doing leg press with any considerable amount of weight.....it doesnt happen every single time but enough that it makes the following set very difficult to say the least but i manage to press on...all i can say is good luck and i attribute it more to straining and the position im in then anything else.....

havent been hit in the head

talked to my bro (a physical therapist) and he said to take it easy for a while and go the the ER if I start getting light headed, woosy, or black out.

I only feel it when I am doing extrenuous lifts

higher than the trap, kinda hard to explain, lower back of the head

It is getting better day by day, ill see what it feels like in 5 days or so

a mate of mine did somthing very simalar doing squats he went to the doc and he said it was a broken blood vessal and if it was going to kill him it would have been instant ,hurts like hell and headaches and fuck up you balance and vision, if it getting better dont sweat

Someone else posted a similar thread a while back and I'm going to give the same response... a good friend of mine had this happen to him earlier this year for the first time... he was lifting at the gym and then suddenly heard a "popping" noise in his head, followed by excrutiating pain... of course, he was panicing.... he saw his doctor, who then referred him to a top-notch neurologist... they ran an MRI, just to rule out anything serious.... and then she came back and told him that he had what's called "weightlifter's exertion headache", something common for weightlifters... since then, it's happened only twice, when he lifts hard.... she gave him the NSAID indomethacin and it seems to help...

I'm actually going through something similar right now, only the pain in the center of my forehead...it's a vice-like squeezing pressure.... I've seen my doctor, a neurologist, a chiro.... have gotten bloodwork, and MRI, and MRA and everything is negative so far... can't figure out what's causing it.

My suggestion, go see your doctor and insist they do an MRI...and even an MRA... rule out anything serious... why take a chance? And why wait to see if it goes away or if it happens again? If it is a vessel that's ruptured, it will surely show up on those tests.

Good luck!

I talked to one of my old lifting buddies back home and he said he had the same thing you have. Forehead throbbing.
Shit sucks.
I would have it checked out but Im going out of state for 3 days.
K coming once my 24 hour limit has ran out :)

The same happens to me when doing heavy stand up barbell curls. It seems like high BP but it happens to me even when not on gear. I think it has to do with lack of oxygen to your head, and also the muscles tensing up in the back of your neck. Try to get some more breaths of air while doing your set, seems to help a bit with me.

Everything is all good now, now pain no nothing. Just took a couple weeks off and took Fish Oil, Flax Oil, and Niacin. Put in a good shoulder and tricep workout yesterday with no problems whatsoever!

I get tension headaches in that area. Many people tend to thrust/throw their head forward and down when doing certain exercises...not good as it can strain the neck/trapezius muscles and cause pain and headaches.
