Thoughts on the Atkins diet?

My father( whose in his mid 50's) just recently saw a cardiologist because hes been having heart problems *related to high cholesterol as well as mild obesity* well the doctor prescribed lipitor and the Atkins diet for him and i wondered what u all think about it? Having read the book i think some of the ideas are pretty normal of a ketogenic diet however im still unsure if it is unhealthy as there is no set limit for fat especially.

Hmm, well its super popular on college campuses too.

Its not so great for young women from what I hear (if they wish to have children). There is priliminary evidence that it could be bad for your bones (in the long run) as well.

Wouldn't it make you really sluggish if you cut out the carbs? I know a lot of people who have lost weight on it though. Wouldn't it be better to limit carbs and cut out the sugars? India and the South-Pacific are full of skinny people who eat nothing but fish and carbs...

There's no set amount of proteins and fat because you'll be so sick of the food, you won't want to eat it. Trust me!

I didn't experience any negative sides on my 2 month experiment except for crankiness due to the lack of being able to eat the food I used to so love. The good doctor is right, however. After a while, you don't even miss the food.

After ketosis kicked in, I was losing about a lb. a day, believe it or not. Biggest problem was being able to maintain variety and making sure i didnt' take in hidden carbs in fast food or such. It's funny to see what you thought didnt have carbs but actually does.

I have lost 65 pounds on it before in my 20's. Supposably in the long run it lowers your cholesteral count. From what I hear, once you burn all your carbs off..The fat in the diet has nothing to bind to so it just passes through your body and out the other end. My dad who is in his 60's does this diet every so often. I have been dieting for the past 3 weeks losing 22 pounds and am ready to shock my system by swithing over to this any day now.

Basically, the Atkins is the ketogenic diet for the masses. And although nothing beats ketosis for fat burning, there are smarter ways to get there. What I mean is, because the Atkins diet is marketed towards the average (read ignorant) consumer. The average person thinks "Wow, you mean I can eat all the bacon I want, and triple cheese with everything..."
Now, a smart ketogenic diet would be one where you figure out how much carbs you can eat and still go into ketosis. And it would be based on leaner protein such as chicken, fish and whey...but I guess my point is there are much better ketogenic diets than the Atkins.

Atkins with low carb, and/or carb up every 4th day (being last meal of the day is around 200 carbs). Seems to be well recomended by those I know who know thier dietary shiz.

I think atkins is great. I have almost been on it for a month, and I'm getting nice results.

But, I eat mostly chicken, fish, and some red meat, with most of my fat coming from olive oil or flax seed oil. My carb intake is around 10 with 99% of it coming from broccoli and romaine lettuce.

I cut out all dairy except eggs. I cut out bacon and all that crap as well (hidden carbs)

I count calories as well-----

Fibrous carbs = GOOD! This is stuff like broccoli and green beans etc, aye.

My diet is pretty similar, olive/flax, chicken, tuna, but I dropped the red meat awhile back.

My carbs is 75 or below per day, but many will do 30 or less per day, and alot of that is often only in post workout meal for some people. Some people are up to 70% fat intake per day, without keto stix its somewhat hit or miss.

Didnt know bacon had hidden carbs, but I dont hardly eat the stuff.

AVOID SUGARS and this means all sugar, even aspartame can produce a mild insulin spike, but sugars (honey, etc as well) will stop fat burning for 2-4 hours at a time, this is why its a high fat, LOW-NO carb, protein kind of diet.

Yes, sugars are in almost everything sweet thats processed--even the atkins bars have sugar---kinda weird....

check this link, its really interesting and helpful

here

As for protein bars I believe they finally have to divulge honey etc sweetners, where before they didn't have to claim it as sugar since it wasn't table sugar

Gotta love the industry.

Its difficult for some people, to instantly change your diet is tough period.

Your not talking I imagine about a variation of the Cambridge Diet are you? I forget how many people died during the testing, 50 some odd people I believe it was. Basically it was a heavy protein (mostly powder) diet and only about 1100 calories, stupid.

The only protein bar I can eat on this diet is Nitro-Tech....it has no glycerine, which is why it basically tastes like crap...but hey when you're dieting its better than nothing.

This is a timely topic for me. I just started this yesterday in an attempt to drop about 10lbs before my Army PT test later this month.

Corn you said it is ok to replenish every 4 days or so. That would be good for me cuz I workout a lot and probably need some carbs. I want to run a 15K this Saturday and should not be too depleted.

Jenn, long time no see. :)

Every 4th day or twice a week carb up, this is generally your 6th meal of the day being about 200g carbs.
