damn. How did that happen? I use non grip open palms all the time.

I believe he thought the spotter had it and the spotter thought he had it. I would've risen up and commenced kickin some spotter ASS!

Oh shit. I did`nt even think of that. You are correct, the guy is`nt expected to rerack the bar I guess. I`m thinking of lifting at the gym. lol

I was`nt even looking at his grip, I just guessed that he had a poor grip, but that would suck if it was the spotters. DAMN!!!!!!! lol

People just "show up" and expect to get paid without doing the actual work.

I had a spotter not guide the weight back properly on inclines I got my finger carved up pretty good on the post. It was an old time bench with the posts about shoulder width apart, which was about where I was gripping. I wanted to kill that mother f*cker.

I've done that before with the fingers getting ground up. Like you guys said, if I was able to move after dropping something on me, you better run far, run fast and don't look back.

Why on earth would the spotters touch the bar. If you look his elbows aren't locked out and the lift isn't complete. Nor is the bar moving downwards. The bar is still moving up, granted slowly, then stalls and falls. The lifter pooned out at the end.

I agree......the spotter had no reason to touch the bar. Even though the one on the right did at least once throughout that lift.

It always amazes me that they put skinny guys up to spot big lifts. Why would you do that? Considering how close they were hanging to the bar I would have expected them to have a good chance of slowing the bar before it hit the guy......but they didnt. I would have also expected them to have expected a problem considering the lift was stalling and the guy was struggling to stay in the groove.

YES I just watched it again. The Bencher messed up his grip. Can you tell if he has his thumb around the bar? That was a very quick slip.

The thumbs are wrapped around the bar but if you watch closely you see his left wrist flick forward a little just prior to the drop.

Two fukn spotters and neither on knows what the fuck is going on thats nice. I couldnt wait to spot one of them next assholes.

The spotters shouldn't have touched the bar, but that looks like that's at a meet, and if so, they should've been prepared for the lift to go bad. When you're spotting max effort attempts, you do things like lacing your fingers underneath the end of the bar, so if it drops suddenly, you can catch it.

Shit like that should never happen.

I've done that before. I was just repping out with 225 and my wrists gave way. 225 across the chest. I hurt for a few days, but it did not leave a mark

damn, I was laughing. That noise he made was funny.

Thats brutal though, I would be pissed at those spotters too.

Holy shit. Did that guy live? That can kill you.

that was definately the lifters grip giving out.

There was no way the spotters could have stopped that from falling even if they tried, first off they are 110 lbs, second, their hands were practically down by his stomach to begin with when the bar touched their hands, and third, like the video shows, it took like 4 people to lift the weight up.

Everyone there was being an asshole.

Anyone who blaims the spotters is a dumbass.

His grip gave way and NOBODY would have reacted in time.

And your last meet was when?

I saw a guy who was attempting a 700+lb bench damn near get decapitated if not for the three spotters. Even if they couldn't lift it, they sure as hell shoulda been able to hold it until help got to the bench.

I watched the clip yet again... lol The spotters DID have their hand interlocked under the ends of the bar. They were just not strong enough or not quick enough to react. They actually caught the bar and went down with it.

The guy on the left in the vid did a much better job then the other spotter. They did mess up, but it was SOOOO sudden that it caught them off guard and they`re lack of strength/experience added to it.

You are correct. So, they were doing it right, they just didn't belong on the platform.

You sign a waiver when you enter a meet basically saying hey, if you get hurt, your bad, but at the same time, you're counting on the organizer to provide competent spotters.

I think the guy would have been better off with an open hand grip. It would bent his wrists back farther preventing the bar from sliding out like that.

That`s how I bench and I regret ever learning it that way. It`s VERY difficult for me to change my ways now.

and MY wrists kill me from it. I barely need to hold on to the bar with my fingers. It`s not going anywhere.

It's not practical to do that with maximal weights...like GL says, it kills the wrists, and has a tendency to bring your wrists behind your elbows, changing your bar path and sometimes bringing you out of the groove of your shirt.

well, I've never gone over 365 so it works okay for me. :)

it's not going to if you drop it on your ribs.

I think that Gary Frank droped +700lbs on himself once. In theory, your chest should get more solid as you become able to lift heavier weights.

You have a point. But have you ever had to catch a weight that fell that quickly?

I know it's possible but it can't be easy.

I've had to play catch before, but luckily I've never been in the position to catch one that's completely fallen out of hand.

Easy or not, that's why those guys are there: to protect the lifter.

Obviously, dropping the bar like that isn't gonna happen very often, but still...you've gotta be ready.

Looks to me that it slipped, the bar doesn't look like it has the grips etched in it, basically looks like smooth steel,. I know my hands get pretty sweaty sometimes and will slide outwards while doing bench. One thing though, it looked like the spotters couldn't even lift the bar up.
