Classy Skank
A few weeks ago the Stae of Ohio sent my hubby a letter. This letter was in regards to prooving he had car insurance. He had to send in a copy of his insurance card. It stated he had 30 days to comply or his drivers lic. would be pulled. No biggie , he sent in the proper info.

I get a letter in the mail yesterday from the Ohio Bureau Of Motor Vehicles. It states:

Dear*****

The Ohio Bureau of Morot Vehicles has recieved documentaion showing your complicance with Ohio's Financial Responsibilty Law regarding the above- referenced Ohio license plate number. The information you provided is satisfactory and is on compliance with Ohio Law.

I wish to thank you for responding to our request for this information. We APOLOGIZE for any concern this request caused you. Our request for information is intended to help identify Ohio vehicle owners who may not be operating a motor vehicles without proper liability coverage, thereby, reducing your risk of being involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist.

Sincerely-

Frank Caltrider

WTF? Why did'nt I get a letter asking for my proof of insurance? Does the state actually think that this will help? What if my hubby decides to NOT pay his next insurance bill?

Hubby asked a guy at work, which he knows has NO insurance if he got such a letter. Guess what? NO HE DID NOT GET A LETTER IN THE MAIL.

I can see where my tax dollar's go....

It's an insurance audit. Random Sampling at its best.

Sounds like an intrusion to me. You must demonstrate proof of insurance to have your car registered right? That should be enough.

Nope, Total...The DMV only asks if you have insurance coverage when you go in. Anyone could lie!

Wodin..They never have in alll the year's I've ben driving sent such a request to me or ANYONE I know...Gotta be a new tax eating tatic!

It just makes me crazy to think that they are spending my money this way!

Why not just have the DMV ask to see your ins. card! Or if you do it thru the mail- send a copy of your card when you re-register your vehicle!

Pissing me off. I may make a call to this Frank dude today! I feel like having a pissing match with someone!:)

Some states require proof of insurance to register a car. In states like this there have sprung up fly-by-night places that charge HUGE premiums. It is expected that you stop at this place on the way to the DMV and buy some insurance. You register your car, and swing by the same place on the way back to cancel your policy. Of course there is a nonrefundable application fee which is how the places make their money, not from the premiums which they never collect.

JC...It still boils down to it's allllll stupid and a waste of time and my tax money!

Cheater's will find a way to get around it anyways!

Makes me crazy!

Write a letter to your congressman, state insurance commisioner, and governor. You need to make your feelings known to those in charge.

JC

Did he change insurance policies recently?

If you cancel your insurance policy, sometimes the insurance company will send a letter to DMV that you are no longer insured. This happened to me when I missed a couple payments..

Jon..I'M CALLING!

Dawookie..Nope, we've had the same ins. compant for over three year's. Not missed a payment either.

Vix,

I am a performance auditor with the State of North Dakota, it sounds pretty much like Wodin is describing. I am sure they are conducting an audit, with one step to determine the number of uninsured drivers.

I am working on an audit of the DOT here and we will be sending out surveys to random individuals who renewed registrations in the last year.

hmmm, I guess my state must do it differently. I don't have an insurance card.
it says on my registration who I am insured with if that counts.
all I know is the company and I have a dude that I call if I need to talk about my account.

knock on wood I can make it until Feb without anything where I need it. then I'm out.

They started the random insurance audit a few years ago. I got one last year & my GF got one a couple months ago. Just think of all the money they waste on printing those stupid ass letters out. It's probably a bribe from the insurance companies to line politicians pockets.

If I do not show up around here in the next few days..You all know that the Ohio mafia got me...

I spoke to a gent by the name of Phil Gullamino *sounds Mafia to me*.

Anyhoo, his title was State Registrar. I asked him a few simple questions that I had in regards to the letter:

1) I wished to know why my hubby was chosen. He stated that his office goes thru the DMV listings and also recent traffic violations--AHH HA! Hubby got a speeding ticket two months ago..BIG ASS FINE TOO! So... I'm guessing that this is why he was "picked". All fine and good..makes sense now- sort of!

I then asked:

2) How many people are on staff for this "audit" of ins. card holding Ohioians? His reply: "We have a staff of over 100 in this Columbus office".

3) I asked him exactly why there is a need for such a staff? He starts in on the Law..blah, blah , blah. I allow him to go on with his speel!I then simply state that I think it's a cover for more people to be "tax eaters" on Ohio payroll. He got real quiet....I explained that I have no problem with such an audit if it were to show CORRECT number's.I brought up the fact that anyone can get fly by night ins. or lie about even having it when asked at the DMV. Why not close his office and just have everyone present proper ins. card's when we need to renew our tags? People at the DMV can check vaild ins. cards REAL easy! He then states that this law has saved many Ohio people from being hurt by un-insured people. I laughed and reply," I'll be sure to post a sign in the back of my car that says: Hit me only if you have current insurance and the State of Ohio Registrar gave you a stamp of audit approval".

What a damn farce!

Zen, I hear ya doll. You have to admit that ANY number can be forced though!

If I get hit by someone with NO coverage..I'm covered by my ins. company....ALL OF US PAY FOR THOSE UN-INSURED PEOPLE WHEN WE PAY OUR OWN PREMIUMS! This law is not going to help me or anyone else ..You can not get blood from a turnip..Know what I mean?

You are absolutely correct. That is the beauty of surveys, you often can get the results you want before you ever start.

Zen

:) Amen to that...

I'm waiting for my new Mafia pal in Columbus to call the State Tax Auditor.... I happen to know a few of them too....hehehe

If you really want to be a thorn....

There has to be some sort of financial accountability in the state, being good stewards of the tax payers dollars and all that. Start digging around to find out how much they are spending on this little program. Ask them for copies of their mission statement (most state agencies are supposed to have them.). Budget documentation and almost all other state paperwork, is public record. Audit the auditors so to speak.

I'm NOT done with this issue ..I PROMISE!

I've got so much going on right now rather than piss with "city hall".

I'll make some more calls when I get a chance!

Another easy thing to do is call your local representatives. Just let them know what a crock it is etc.

They usually will call or go up to visit the State Registar and what to know what is going on.

It happens to us all the time. Often just takes one phone call.

Vix, Lemme know if you need a Heavy to stand with ya when you storm the State Capitol bldg.... :argue:

We shall overcome....

Thanks Zen...I am a spitfire when something moves me...I'll follow up with this situation..Rest assured they have NOT heard the last from me.

LOL..Y-lifter..You gonna be my body guard? Deal!:)
