I have started this thread in response to the Nature Boy's love of the Washington Redskins. I now see clearly that we should not use Indian names as mascots. I will start a petition to have the Redskins mascot changed to the WhiteSkins. I have found my motivation for this action thanks to students at the University of Northern Colorado who have taken up a similiar cause. Please show your support by boycotting all Redskins games and merchandise.

I think they should change the name of the skins. I could really care less about tradition. If the team was called the washington Blackskins, or washington yellowskins people would be shitting.

as for the games and merchandise I don't do any of that shit. I've been to enough games and seen enough trash of all races and colors that I'll never go back. And I don't even bother buying any redskins gear because I view those purchases as a waste of money. So I'm a part of the boycott I guess.

I have never heard any Irish people complain that Notre Dame should change there mascot. I was driving to work one day and there was a group of Indians marching up the side of the road with signs saying that the Braves should change their name. "Respect Our Heritage" one sign said. "Fire Bobby Cox" another sign said. I'm not sure if the guy holding that sign was part of the march or not though.

When people pick a name for a team or a mascot they pick something that they are proud of. That's why you don't see teams like the maggots, the worms, the bottomfeeders. Who the hell wants a crappy name like that. You pick a name that means something like strength, courage, and pride. The Indian names were picked because they meant all that and more. Not to put the American Indians down. If they don't understand that, then fuck it, change it.

When I was in the National Guard we got out statements. They had a lot of vital statistics on then. Well there was a Korean guy who was a really over sensitive and a bit of an asshole. Anyway, for race his said yellow. He was upset and understandably so. I think someone was having fun with him. I don't think the US goverment used yellow as a race. Sill, it was kinda funny.

Its a moot point, Dan Schnider's got enough money to have them called whatever the fuck he wants them to be called... End of story. Even the local washngton media (wilbon & kornhizer et al) who are very LIBERAL don't even bat an eye at the the name redskins.. The word "nigger" by definition, doesn't have even close to the same meaning as it has been used in the last hundred + years... That word, when used to personally insult or attack someone because of thier race, IMO, is wrong, so in that context, no, it certianly would not be ok... The word "redskin" was used during war to classify Indian people, but as far as I know, has not been used in a derogatory manner, (at least not by thinking people) in a long time. Plus, I have NEVER heard anyone say, "Those fucking redskins are taking my job because of affirmative action", whereas I have heard "nigger" used in that context. I just think you're generalizing too much. Some people use the excuse of free speech to be ignorant assholes, acting on the presumption that they're saying what they think and feel, and it's thier right. What I'm talking about is on a much different scale... The KKK is still running around spouting off all thier ignorant nonsense, yet you don't hear SHIT about them in the news, I just think people get all riled up about small stuff, like team names, it's ridiculous... It may very well be offensive to some people, and those people have the RIGHT to be offended, though I think thier energy would be more useful elsewhere... I find it similar to the woman who is now suing Bob Vila for the injuries she sustained because he kicked the back of her seat while they were on the same plane.... It's ridiculous, some people need to stop being such candy asses and get thicker skin. If you're offended by something, don't watch/buy/support it. But don't attempt to infringe on another person's rights, i.e. try to FORCE them to change the team's name, because you're offended. If something offends you on TV, TURN IT OFF!!! Same thing applies in all other facets of life...
