Saw it on IMAX 3D yesterday. Very entertaining but slow in the middle (3 hour movie). Makes me want to go back and watch the older ones. Some amazing set pieces and outstanding CGI work on character models. Gollum alone sets a new standard in animation. As for things like plot and character development it's pretty typical of these types of movies. Gets the job done.
