So I just saw The Cove last night. It's out on DVD. The Cove Movie: Welcome
I recommend it highly.
In addition to its expose of the Japanese village of Taiji's barbaric dolphin slaughter, they also show how mercury accumulates in dolphin meat and other large fish.
I won't be eating tuna anymore- or any large fish.
In the special features there is a section called "Mercury Rising" where they show how scientists did an experiment where they did a sort of "Supersize Me" but with tuna-eating 200 grams a day for one month. Their levels of mercury rose, obviously.
Two weeks in they switched to sushi grade tuna and thought they were safe, but the mercury levels in their bodies more than doubled the previous level. Sushi tuna is far far worse than canned, but neither is healthy to eat. None of the scientists will eat tuna today.
By the end of the study, they were at levels that matched the toxicity levels of those in Minamata, Japan during their mercury poisioning disaster.
here is an excerpt from Minamata Disaster:
"Not until the mid-1950's did people begin to notice a "strange
disease". Victims were diagnosed as having a degeneration of their
nervous systems. Numbness occurred in their limbs and lips. Their
speech became slurred, and their vision constricted. Some people
had serious brain damage, while others lapsed into unconsciousness
or suffered from involuntary movements. Furthermore, some victims
were thought to be crazy when they began to uncontrollably shout.
People thought the cats were going insane when they witnessed
"suicides" by the cats. Finally, birds were strangely dropping
from the sky. Series of these unexplainable occurrences were
bringing panic to Minamata. "
A regular can of tuna is 120 g, just over half of the testing amount.
I was eating tuna regularly. WTF?
I recommend it highly.
