The Big Dig -- World's Biggest Boondoggle?

redguru

Can Massachusetts get anything right when funded by government? The seriously bloated project is killing commuters. Now Mass is asking for Federal help to bail out the most wasteful public works project in US history. Do you think Kerry and Kennedy will get this put in a rider on some other bill?

The Big Dig is just a decades-long construction project designed to make it's investors and workers lotsa moolah. It was a political sweetheart deal for some ass-kissers in backroom deals. Taxpayers, as always, got fucked.

Too bad Mass doesn't have it's won GAO agency to investigate the corrupt deal.

Sometimes the politics on here is so silly...
My don't you ask the Governor of the state Mitt Romney to act on this.

Ooh wait , he a Republican, isn't he???

Mitt Romney made the request for federal aid, but Kennedy and Kerry have to fund it. It is the purpose of the State's U.S. Senators to represent the State. All governors try to get the money from the Feds first, regardless of party.

The Big Dig was around long before Romney's election and is a boondoggle of epic proportion. Basically a welfare program for Mass's Unionized labor pool and construction contractors.

By placing it as a rider on another bill, they can get it funded under the table, so to speak. Happens all the time, both sides of the aisle. What I am asking you to consider, is the Big Dig's failure a Federal issue or a State issue?

Hey Red, when was the last time you drove around Boston?

They used to be fucked for traffic. Now they're freeways are better than Seattle's.

Also, I never mentioned Democrat or Republican in the initial post. I just named the Senators who would be introducing the funding request in the Senate. Whether it is a Democrat or a Republican, i would hate to have to fund this wasteful project from another State.

You didn't have to mention democrat or republican. Your rep speaks for itself.
Also the 2 senators your mentioned are democrats , so your point was obvious...

Also Senators don't have to introduce the bill. A house member can do the same and the bill can be sent to the senate. There are ways to do this then what you are stating

Last time was in 2000. I'm not saying the project didn't help. It was just way too costly and wasteful. I remember when they thought it would be $5B and already over budget.

Since it is a state wide project, not a district-wide project, it is in the bailiwick of the Senate.

The burden of this project should fall on Massachusetts, not the Several States. Is all I'm trying to convey here. Party affiliation be damned.

A construction project that went over budget? Wow, that is big news.
Seriously, I think that there should be a better system to hold a contract to it's origional bid.
We were in Boston in June, it was a breeze to get around, used to be a bitch.
In WA state, noone wants to fund transportation, so we get some of the worst traffic in the country. Sometimes you gotta suck it up and pay the bills. That is one of the reasons Boeing gave for leaving.

This one is $25B at last count, >6 times the original estimate.

Ninth grade civics.

BS, a governor can redirect state funding as he chooses. Atleast in Illinois he can. Each state has it own constitution and the roles of the members of that state. The state, and the voting citizens define who can do what and to what extent thier roles can reach. A civics class will not teach you that unless it is the civics class designed for THAT STATE

How much did the federal government pay to the state of florida in the last ten years for disaster relief?

GJohnson, if a bill affects multiple localities it is considered a Statewide project, normally introduced in the Senate. If it affected a district in Boston, then I could see that Congressperson introducing the legislation. It is the province of the Senate to represent the State, the province of the House to represent the people in thier district.

Disaster Relief is in a big kitty, already funded. How much would Washington State get if Mt. St. Helens erupts? I tend to disagree with Federal Aid for disaster relief in all cases. That should also be tended to by the State affected.

Don't get me started on that one. I think the idea of Israeli Lobbiest etlling Bush to invade Iraq makes sense in alot of ways. Just hard to believe a conspiracy like that with that many people involed would actually happen

Because Kerry and Kennedy are in FEDERAL congress, where they have the ability to attach riders to bills for funding. Just like the original post stated.
