How comparable is Sigma's OS system in relation to Canon's IS system? Both are basically stabilizers that help you shoot at slower speeds handheld.

Is the Canon worth the extra $$?

Funny you asked...I found myself wishing that Sigma offered image stabilization yesterday. I have bought nothing but Canons for four years now. Their IS system is excellent.

I will eagerly look into the Sigma OS offerings. I need a lighter lens with image stabilization. We all have days when our hands are less than 100% rock steady when holding up several pounds several hundred times.

Sigma now has a 80-400 OS system.

Canon seems to really rip you for their IS.

P.S. if you can find a 100-400 Canon L for sale at a good price, LMK.

Best place to get used equip is fredmiranda.com - in their buy/sell forum.

I bought my camera there - quite a bit of equipment changes hands around there

I debated when I bought the 70-200 if I should have the IS on it. Decided against as I mostly shoot on a monopod with high shutter speed. Is the IS really worth it in that case?

Here are several reviews on the new Sigma 80-400 OS:

http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=223&cpage=2&perpage=15&cat=37#poststart

Seems it is heavier and slower and less expensive. Image quality and OS/IS systems appear comparable.

I have the Canon 100-400 IS lens. My only lament is the price I paid.

My usual advice is that serious Nikon or Canon pros should buy Nikon or Canon glass and others do fine with Sigma, Tamron etc.

This is the only OS system from Sigma right now. I am positive that will quickly change since they made a substantial investment and OS/IS is simply.....red hot.

They are a bit too proud of IS on their L lenses.

My favorite Canon lense for the money.....the 28-135 IS lens. It is light and clear and effective for general purpose shooting. I am really starting to dislike heavy lenses. But I go for hours.

I have the Sigma 10-20 and the Tamron 28-75 2.5

Need something in the upper zoom range that I won't have to lug a tripod around for .

Buy a monopod or get IS, otherwise your shit WILL blur... unless you crank the shutter speed waaaaaaaaaay up.
