tell me about snowboarding

steer with your back foot... it is like a cross between surfing and skiing. It is really fun... skateboarding helped me alot, cause I rode my skateboard like a surfboard. When you get there just play around with it... if you can ski... that will help a little. The edges of the board will turn you... remember that.

really you should ask MP5.... this is his corner of perfection.

The best advice I can give you is to take a few lessons to get you started.

Snowboarding is a lot of fun. But it is difficult in the beginning. (at least it was for me :))

TAKE LESSONS!!!!!!!

If you take lessons, you'll be doing blue runs with no problem after 3 days (if you already have a base level of fitness).

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING feels like cutting fresh tracks through deep powder on a board.

Yeah, I skateboarded too... Thought that would transfer, but I didn't find the two similar at all in practice. Maybe it was the orientation of the feet.

Here are a couple tips. First, start off with a shorter board -- the shorter, the slower. Second, use the strap-style lock-ins as opposed to the step-ins, much easier for a beginner that has to take the board on and off all the time.

Learn to snowplow and cut with the edges. I like K2 Fatboy boards, but there are many others. I'm still pretty new to boarding myself.

Lessons are most likley a good idea in that case. But I would still look for MP5 for advice.

yup....wear padded pants.....honest :D
you WILL fall alot....either on your ass or your hands....
have fun...it rocks I love it :D

hehe
the pants i got are pretty damn cool
they are supposedly more for boarding than skiing
they allow for more movement IMO

i think i'll be trying to just land on my ass
i could no handle injuring my wrist.... or anything for that matter.

I've been sking and I suck at it - my center of gravity is apparently up just below my chin.
I'm looking forward to trying snow boarding this winter, we shall see.
glad to see I'm not the only one new to it this year :)

You will love it!!!! Snowboarding is an awesome sport!!! My advice: don't be scared or nervous! It will feel really weird and uncomfortable at first, but once you let loose and get used to the way the board moves and you relax, and you start moving, that's when the magic happens!!!!

Advice tip#2: keep your knees slightly bent and flexible!!!! You will have more control.

Advice tip #3: If you feel out of control, and you need to stop, just fall on your butt! Definitely try to use your butt for landing as opposed to your knees. The first time i went, I kept using my knees as brakes and I was so bruised up for the next week I could barely walk let alone get back on the board!! Yeah...definitely avoid stopping on your wrist...if you think you might do that, wear wrist guards (you can wear the ones used for rollerblading)

I cannot wait to go again!!! Soon enough...soon enough!!! :p

Be ready for some hurtin the first day or two. The learning curve is steep, but quick, if you know what I mean. I.e. people get the hang of it relatively soon, but it's almost impossible right of the bat.

Don't lean back, you will have no control. It's counter intuitive to lean forward facing down hill, but you'll get used to it.

Also, WATCH those edges when making a transition turn, there's nothing worse than getting your backside edge caught and flying back first down the slope.

Not to be scared, it's cool, you'll be carving in no time.

Oh, and when you go for the 360 air, turn your head around first, and your body and board will follow.

TheMachine is absolutely right. TAKE LESSONS it really helps and it is fun to especially with a class. That way you can watch everybody catch a rail or two and see the funny falls.

Also you ought to try wakeboarding it is a blast too.

I wish i would have taken the class.

I have been a surfer and wakeboarder for years, so I thought it would be no problem. While I did learn quickly, I think I could have avoided having to figure certain things out for myself by taking the class. I was so beaten after the first day of trying it.

awesome advice guys
i really appreciatre it

i read this quote and i feel it explains the idea pretty well
skiing is easy to learn but difficult to master
but snowboarding is difficult to learn, but easy to master

thats optimism for me, hehe
i am damn excited man
i cant wait

Can anyone recommend where to go for lessons? Any particular mountain have an especially good program, or are they all about the same? I want to take lessons this winter, and was thinking about going to either western Canada (Whistler or Lake Louise?) or Colorado. (I have a lot of frequent flyer miles...)

Group lessons all seem to be about the same, the only time it might be better somewhere vs. another is if you get private instructions with someone that has been recommended to you.

Whistler is awesome! I think they have a pretty extensive snowboarding area too...I will be going there for the first time sometime this winter. It should be pretty kewl!
