Techies, I have an ActiveX problem :( how to fix?

bran987

New member
I get this message when trying to validate windows to download the new media player:

Your current browser cannot run the ActiveX control required by the genuine Windows validation process.

plus lots of other things don't work because of this ActiveX problem. Did I not download it or something? I use Norton.

Also, it's a brand new laptop, I don't get it.

Thanks :(

Go to Circuit city and ask to exchange your laptop for a PlayStation because you're tpp dumb to use a computer!

or go to Microsoft.com and download and install the latest version of ActiveX

Actually forget about the above message
I thought it was directX

Maybe it's the firewall??

I'm sorry, You need to change your security settings in IE to allow activeX controls

It'll be a check box in Internet Options on the Advanced tab

However, I would turn it off again after you install WMP10.

ok I Checked in there

Advanced Tab
then under Security

2 options:

Allow active content from CD's to run on My Computer
Allow active content to run in files on My Computer

don't see anything else that mentions "active" crap :(

The active content in files one is the one you need.

Just uncheck it after you install WMP10

Anyway why do you want to download WMP?

Use winamp for MP3 and another player for videos

Probably for embedded sites. Hence the reason he needs the activeX control.

have you gotten all the critical updates for XP yet?

The really critical one looks like a penguin.

Sorry, Bran, can't help on this but to suggest that you consider not using Windows.

You are definately right there, but until StarOffice perfects its excel clone, no dice.

just to prove my point, I have been trying so hard to keep this laptop clean, I've never even surfed porn on it, only use my desktop for that, so there is no porn explanation for this like there usually is.

i would just like to add at this point that bush is nowhere to be seen, having failed yet again to help his fellow american citizens (bran, in this case). george bush does not care about persian people.

come again?

If you don't have Windows XP Service Pack2, there is an exploit that will take you to a fake windows update site, installs fake windows update hacks and screws with your browsers.

and I check to see if this happened how?

Right click on the my computer icon, go to properties and tell me if it says Service Pack 2 is installed.

says:

Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

damn, I guess that means it's installed? I almost wish it wasn't, at least then I'd know what happened.

btw thank you a lot for trying to help me like this.

Try to uninstall the Microsoft .net framework and reboot. Then attempt to go to the Windows update site.

there are two under add/remove progs

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB8886903)

try removing the hotfix first

if that doesn't correct it remove the framework.

.Net incorporates all the com+ applications, and I think that's where your problem lies.

uninstalled the hotfix, rebooted, doesn't work
i'll uninstall the other one now

As soon as you uninstall it and reboot, uninstall the windows update control program as well.
ok done on the first part, but I don't see where to uninstall the windows control prog??

You may not have it yet. Try clearing your browser cache and go to the Windows Update website.

ok I deleted cache in mozilla and deleted temp. internet files and cookies in IE, right?

Make sure you use IE to get to windows update.
I was

ok maybe this will help

I was experimenting so I went to "Office Update" instead of "windows update"

I could get to that page so I clicked check for updates, and it beeped and says:

This site might require the following ActiveX control: 'Office Update Installation Engine' from Microsoft Corp. Click here to install....

what do you think?

bran987 said:
tried it :(
this is so hard to explain.
you know the Blue Title bar at the top of IE
I go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
in the blue title bar it says "Microsoft Windows Update"
in the actual broswer, nothing but blank white.
man.

Almost sounds like you have a hosts.deny file and the microsoft domain is on it. I'm out of ideas. Re-download the microsoft .net 1.1 framework from cnet or somewhere like that. Install that and retry.

Can you try pinging the windows update site?

I'm a dumbshit
You're running Norton Internet Security?

If so, disable that stupid assed firewall that is so damn paranoid and retry.

how do I do that again? go to Run then type ping windowsupdate.microsoft.com?

how how how I"m excited now

bran987 said:
also, when I load Norton up, it never gives me the status of my system

it perenially says "refreshing"

It sounds like a blaster-style worm, but I couldn't be sure. I consider Norton Internet Security a virus in its own right, as it takes a huge chunk or resource and processing real estate. I'd dump it, use Zone Alarm firewall and AVGFree Anti-virus.

bran987 said:
can you go there and tell me where they say to get the framework for general users and then tell me if you get the irony of this

LOL, sorry. Did you try uninstalling NIS?

I think the problem is the chain of events of my dumbshit troubleshooting. Norton is the Culprit, but I was trying to fix symptoms, not the actual problem. Once we get Norton out of the way, you should be able to browse WindowsUpdate.

However, if there is a real blaster-style worm on your system, it may be preventing you from accessing WindowsUpdate, McAfee's website and Symantec's. Also causing the same sympoms.

Is it a legal version of Windows?

Regedit

check HKey Local Machine for the following Key
\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\App.EXEName

If that's there you have the W32/Bodiru worm, crashes AV, prevents Windowsupdate, and access to AV sites and downloads.

anthrax said:

Anthrax, if disabling Norton doesn't help him, I am leaning to a worm. Which one, I have no idea. There's been so many blaster clones out there that you can never tell.

Bran, have you been on any p2p network lately? Downloaded a keygen or a no-cd patch?

redguru said:
quick question, look in your "My Music" directory are there any files there that shouldn't be?
there are some songs in there, think they were always there since I got the comp, dunno.

anthrax, yes, the windows is legal, came with the laptop from dell

redguru, uninstalled norton internet security. still can't surf windows update. tried to uninstall something else called "Norton Security Center" I can't, it says another install is already in progress (which is impossible), finish that first.

what is Hkey local machine? do I just check the directory you typed in my Hard Drive?

Go to run, type regedit

Go to HKey Local Machine and follow the structure I already posted.

I had once such a worn
It prevents you to go to microsoft.com
it's a 404 not a blank page

I'd say it's linked to the new Microsoft authentification protection

You;'re running Mcafee AV?

All other files in startup look ok, looks like your touchpad, cd writer and a few apps starting, nothing telltale there.
I started installing mcaffee when I first got the computer and it wouldn't finish, I bought the student discount version at school for $10.

redguru said:

yes, I Can.

don't forget though, I can get to microsoft.com, just not the windowsupdate part

man, this is hilarious.

See, that's what's strange. Norton and McAfee won't finish installing and you can't get to Windows Update. You must have a worm. Can you back up any important documents and reinstall Windows? I know that's a major PITA but at this point...

I could, I could... pretty easily at this point.

If I could do 2 things that I don't know how to do.

1) Save my bookmarks and reload them into firefox.

2) Save all my emails/calendar items/tasks in Microsoft Outlook that I've gotten off my pop server and have them all back when I reinstall.

If I could do those two things I could reinstall windows without throwing too much of a fit.

I don't use firefox but in outlook go to the file menu |import and export| export to a file|

Use comma seperated values (windows) save to a file on floppy. You have to do a seperate one for mail, calendar, tasks, and contacts.

You should be able to save your bookmarks to a file also and save to floppy. In IE it is also under FILE | Import and Export

shit, I have to do it for every folder I created to save mail in too?
Is this really hard to put back together when I reload? If I have folders inside of folders and I have to reload them all separately?

It won't let you select a parent folder? If it can, move all the mail folders into one folder and try it. I'll try it myself, I'm curious.

redguru said:
If all of those mails are in the inbox, it'll export the whole group of folders.
they are all folders i created as offshoots of the inbox if you know what I mean?

Do you have a firewall or anti-virus setup that prevents cookies?

I have both but they don't prevent cookies

redguru said:
From the wording of their dialogue box, it looks like they are trying to install a cookie and are not getting info from it.

When I close and re-open IE I'm still logged as Anthrax on EF
So cookies are allowed
